Hello all.

I'd appreciate your experienced thoughts, opinions, suggestions, etc... on what I currently have driveline-wise for my '64 Polara convertible and where I think I want to go with my restoration.

History of what I have:
1. Car is originally a 318 automatic but the only original driveline part that I have is the tapered rear axle. When I bought the car, the P.O. included a 727 cable shift Trans. numbered G2466147 1850873. I've decoded this as a 1965 for a 361, 383, or 413 'B' or 'C' body. It has a 30 spline output shaft that has nothing attached to it. The tailshaft measures 18 1/2" long and is numbered 2464217-4 and the number '64' is in the date wheel. I also have a torque convertor but I'm not sure what it is.

2. I acquired a ball & trunnion drive shaft from a FBBO member here. It has a 4" diameter flange and measures 58 9/16" from the flange face to the center line of the rear cross.

3. I've acquired a 1967 HP 440 motor and some miscellaneous parts for it. My current plan for the motor is to build it as a factory looking Max Wedge clone running on pump gas.

4. I'd like to keep the cable shifting, the B&T driveshaft, and the tapered rear in the car simply for originality reasons. *The car will not be raced as long as I own it.*

Driveline Questions:
1. Will the 1965 transmission work with the 1967 440 motor without issues?

2. Can I adapt the 65 transmission to work with my B&T driveshaft? If 'yes' what would you recommend? And yes, I realize that 65 was the first year for the slip yoke and that I'm trying to go the opposite direction of the way most folks go. Thanks!

I agree. I'm sure someone has a 62-64 Big Block 727 that would gladly have that 65 727.

I agree with above also the HP 67 motor would be nice for a 67RT or GTX. I got good money for an 67 HP block and 915 heads.

493Mike and Darter6.... Thank you for your comments. I've been thinking too that it might be best to locate a 62-64 big block 727 vs. trying to 'MacGuyver' my 65 to work with the B&T driveshaft.

Polara426....Thank you as well for your suggestion re the 67 440 block I plan to use in the car.

I need a 440 HP block from somewhere though in order to do my build, and this block and its 915 heads came from Brewer's Performance with an added comment from them that it originated from a wrecked/totaled car. So I don't lose any sleep at night wondering if maybe I have the engine that someone with a 67GTX or RT might be looking for today.

Why not just use the 65 trans with a standard slip yoke drive shaft? The valve body would need a 62-64 push button rooster comb and manual valve. It’s a simple swap. Both the 65 and the 64 and earlier use the same converter. Either can be converted to late model 67 and up converter as well.

Check parts for sale in mechanical awhile ago I posted two 64/65 cable shift trans for sale, three different stall converters, cables, and a nice console still have them all.
I will sell separate parts if needed.Lenny
