Hi, first post here, just got my new-to-me 1970 Charger 500 home last night. 318, auto, factory a/c car. Not new to B's though, I've owned my '72 Satellite Custom station wagon for nearly 25 years now.

The Charger was a Florida car all its life, and the heater core is unhooked. I'm guessing (hoping) it was just "we don't need to replace that hose, we never use the heat", and not a bad heater core...but I'll find out soon enough. It now lives with me here in Maryland, and I need the heat!

This is what I have on my firewall. This is a driver, 100% survivor, not a restoration project so I'm not worried about date-coded hoses or anything like that. Connections B and C are slightly smaller diameter than A and D; I presume the hookup goes like this:

A: return to engine
B and C: looped together
D: feed from engine

Yes? Maybe?

Also, there are two fittings on the engine. One to the drivers side, forward of the thermostat; one closer to the passenger side, behind the thermostat. Which is out from the engine, and which is return to the engine?

Today's project is to drain and fill the coolant - right now it tests to +10 degrees, I need to refill it with something that will test colder than that. I have a nice garage, but it's not climate controlled!

I'll do an introductory post about the Charger later today, but I wanted to see if I could get this heater thing sorted out ASAP. Thanks for any help!

B connection is an added heater control valve that doesn’t belong to the car.

C and D connections are the factory heater control valve that probably leaks or somehow won’t work. Your temp control cable connects to this valve originally.

Simplest way to start is You can Connect both hoses to A and remove the valve at B to have full heat all the time. This will check to see if the heater core is good.

I have run this way and you can open the windows slightly or just turn the system off of you get too hot. Or when cold enough outside it’s fine at 100% heat.

But perhaps the added valve works as it should and the system will be fine with it on there.

The heater hose on the intake is hot into the heater, the hose on the water pump is return. On the heater core A is return and the other is hot water in.

Engine connections should have a 1/2” and a 5/8” size. But your heater core will be both 5/8”. The stock heater control valve has the 1/2 and 5/8 connections.

Noticed you just joined.
Welcome put some pictures and a brief bio up in the "Welcome Wagon" forum.

Thank you for the tips. I guess I'll start the hunt for both a valve, and a core. And a manual, to see how much "fun" this is going to be. And while I have it apart, I may as well toss in an a/c core too...

I did get new hoses on, and cut to length...but just clamped around bolts at the firewall end for now. I didn't really want to fill the cabin and the carpet, with coolant...at least, not tonight. Main goal tonight was to do a fresh fill with good antifreeze, since she lives "up north" now!
