I have a question related to my 2012 VW GOLF TDI. I took it to the dealership and turns out the smaller of the two cooling fans is not working. They wanted $800 to fix it. I’ve looked up parts for this and they’re around $100-$150. Just wondering if anyone out there has worked on European cars or has any input. I watched a couple videos and it looks simple enough to replace. I have done a few other of my own fix-it projects on this car.

I have not worked on a Golf but I have worked on some European cars (Audi, BMW, etc) and they are usually pretty straightforward (usually). No reason you cannot do it

I’ve always been into old air cooled Volkswagen’s so I definitely have a full set of tools for those.

I regularly work on a 07 VW Eos 2.0T and it should be straighforward. The only odd tools you MIGHT need are the "special" VW star sockets. They are NOT torx-head, but truly VW/Porsche only. They are called "triple square" because they are literally, three squares offset. You may not need them, but if you are going to do regular work on your VW, get a cheap set. Here are the Amazon ones I have:

Good luck,

I find it disgusting that people keep finding new fastener designs just to profit from sales to mechanics. I do like torx for small screws as they do not slip but, all the rest?

Not positive on your VW but most late model cars that use double fan rack can be pulled from the top.
Look things over once you get the top cover panel pulled. Wiring will have plugs sometimes to a junction point on the back side of the rack.
May also be a couple friction / push in wire loom holders to pop loose. many times that rack will just slip in the bottom notchs of the rear of the radiator with a couple 6mm bolts on top to hold things.
If you can not tip it enough to pull , the top rad hose may have to come off the radiator to get the fans up and out.
once out most are set up to were you can pull and reuse the fan blade only replacing the motor.
Heck if you look around there is prob a U tube video on pulling them.
good luck.

Freaking arrogant Porches....

Did it fix the problem? Whenever I parts swap without diagnosis, it usually isn't the problem...
Well, I took it to the dealership and that’s what they came back with as the diagnosis. So that’s what I fixed. Of course they wanted $800 to do it and I did it for about $110.
