What rear end carrier was used to house the 3:91 gears in a 1964 Dodge 440 2 door sedan with a 426 Street Wedge and 4 speed transmission?
741 or 742???
I have rebuilt the original engine-10.3:1 c/r and 4 speed and now it is time to move to the rear 8 3/4 axle housing. Axles received new bearings, seals and gaskets, so that is done now.
My car is an original factory model, not a clone.

Anyone know how many of these were built?

Thank you

Hard to tell for sure! Fender tag will show what rear end but not the size! My 65 Street Wedge, came with the 1.3/4 pinion 742 case But had 3.23 S/G It was also a factory 4 speed!

I have a 741 case with 3.91 gears or a 742 case with 4.56 gears. Both are positraction. Just wanted to put it back like it came from the factory.
Thanks guys and Happy Holidays to everyone.

Always Sure-Grip, NEVER positraction!!! My 63 has a 489.

741 or earlier casting number equivalent.

742 was a small production window in between the 741 and the 489.

IIRC 68/69 only. 70 and up got 489's.

The 985 case was used from the late 50s to the mid 60s. The 742 case was used from 1960ish to 1968. They both used the 1 3/4" pinion. The 489 was first used in 1969. The 657 and 741 cases both used a 1 3/8"pinion. A 426 4 speed would probably use a large pinion setup.

I've put in the 741 case with the 3.91s/"SURE GRIP" for better street ability.

Does anyone know someone to contact about how many 64 Dodge 440 426 Street Wedge with the 4 speed/2 door sedans went into production?
Someone told me that it 1 of 8.

Thank you all for your replies.

Happy Holidays guys.

I posted this last week or so, my father still has the certicard from his '64 gold 440 w/426 & 4 speed but a hardtop

There are no records for how many of each vehicle for 64 records do exist for 65 and can give you an idea about how many were produced. There are records for 64 Max Wedge and Hemi cars built. I have a 64 Dodge 440 hardtop 426 streetwedge four speed came with a 742 housing.

1 of 8....

It appears someone was quoting Max Wedge, not street wedge, numbers.

489 case appears late 1968. See intro notes in 68 parts book page 3-1 and reference to 489 case in 3-03-3.
