I was just reading an old July of 1967 Popular Hotrodding magazine and they were testing a 67 Coronet 500 with a factory Hemi, I was wondering if this was just a pre-production or some type of test vehicle or was the Hemi available in the 500 series? I would have thought that with the introduction of the 67 RT Coronet that the Hemi would have only been available on the RT?

Never say never when it comes to Mopar...

"By 1967, Chrysler mandated that HEMIs could only be put in their badged muscle car models; i.e. the Charger, new-for-1967 Coronet R/T and the Plymouth Belvedere GTX. Still, a few lower trim level Coronets squeaked through the ranks with 426ci beasts nestled under their hoods. According to Hagerty, a mere 340 HEMI Coronets were ordered for the 1967 model year, although other sources suggest even fewer (238) were manufactured."

I think in 67 if you had the extra 700 some odd dollars, they would check the box on the order form. I'm not sure in the Dodge line but I know of Belvedere I's, II's, Satellite's with Hemi's. I even believe I have seen an actual base Coronet 4 door sedan with a Hemi.

My folks were looking for a new car in 1968 and a New Yorker was on the short list. Dad was working in Michigan at the time and almost bought a Charger. They had them in a lot he could see from the job site, so he went over to look. He found out he could buy a Hemi Charger off that lot for $2,800, but didn't as my Mom insisted on a 4 door. He tried to get the New Yorker with a Hemi in it, but the Dealer told him that Chrysler would not put a Hemi in a four door.

Saw a Hemi 300H advertised in Hemmings. It was some Doctor's estate. Chrysler would not send the 300 out with a Hemi so the Dealer ordered one and replaced the 440 before delivery. I think there were two 300H's in the photo, a Hemi and a Convertible. The guy was seriously into Letter Cars and fins too.

I think the most reliable sources will state there is one known 67 WP23 Coronet 500 Hemi car. Were there others? I don't think factory records exist that would tell us.

3 known WL Coronet Deluxe cars with Hemi
Two WH23; one WH27
The 55 W0 S/S cars
283 WS R/Ts.

(that's 345 total)

So, yes, there are known 1967 non Coronet R/T Hemi cars. There are just not very many of them.

1967 I went into A Dodge dealer in Flint Michigan on Saginaw street to see if i could order a 426 hemi with a 4spd car.

I remembered the salesman said if I bought a 4spd my warranted would be limited on the drive train.

I can not remember for sure if it was 3 months or 6 months due to the 4spd in a plain Jane Coronet.

Must be the 4spds were subject to failure back then.

The almost no guarantee on the drive train scared me away and I ended up with a 68 Z28 instead.

I loved the 4speeds then and still.

I doubt they were having problems with the A833 four-speeds. More likely a belief the 4 speed cars would be driven harder and the motors abused to the point of needing more frequent repair. But I thought all 4 speed, 3-speed and auto cars carried the same factory coverage although i think some high performance engines had shorter coverage.

Red, white and gold ones are the only ones if I recall correctly - with a possible fourth dark blue one exported?

Yup, the 18 spline that would most certainly be behind the hemi has been well known for decades to
be indestructible - unlike the M-22 over in Generic world....
No difference in factory warranty between the stick and the auto.
Either the storyteller or the salesman in the story are/were incorrect/mistaken.

Agreed, sounds like typical $100 on the dash board stuff. I have put way over 600hp through an a-833 and it lived with a good clutch. Not so much with a 2800lb plate and a rag disc!

There is a white '67 WO23 car that is dressed up like a Coronet 500 because the dealership used it for promoting the cars on the lot. It was in SE WI circa 2003. Perfect car down the transistor ignition, etc.

I am glad they did not have ridiculous surcharges that people charge today?

Probably not people were not as greedy as they are today.........

no gas guzzler taxes either

I don’t think the transmission made a difference. The 5/50 warranty, covering the same four speed transmission behind a 440, was limited to 12mo/12 with the Hemi. It was the engine, not the transmission, that affected the warranty.

I was 22 at the time wanting a hemi car back then... and not what i ended up buying.

Although the Z28 was a great runner too.

I am here to tell you what the salesman told me at the dealership.....

I do not care what other facts that are in writing.... maybe the salesman did not get the memo...

I was there! it was as I stated it.

Thanks

I don't believe it would be a surprise to most that many car salesman are full of BS and uninformed on performance cars. And back then some probably didn't know a distributor rotor from a brake rotor. Same holds true today.

salesmen would, and still do, tell people whatever it will take to get us in that car. That, or whatever will make them the most money.

My Dad wanted an overdrive transmission in the new pickup he was buying for traveling. The Salesman said: "Farmers won't buy that pickup" and my Dad replied: "I'm not a farmer". It took my Dad offering to go to another dealer in a small town 60 miles away to get what he wanted.

No clue what the salesman was thinking, just check the boxes and take the check.
