After many weekends that I spent removing all of the wiring, parts and cleaning, degreasing, wire wheeling, priming and scuffing to prepare the engine bay and core support for paint, and all the preparation that it takes to get it ready for paint, my freind Dave Warren painted the engine bay and core support while I was at another car show with my 1936 Packard.

Dave has been helping me with the body work and has a key to my shop. While I was at another car event he surpirsed me yesterday afternoon with photos of the painted engine bay and core support. Now that is a great freind. He told me that after all of the prep I had done and he had just picked up the paint on Friday( which was a week long process of getting the color match perfect), that he decided to just do it!

It's great when you can start putting parts back on instead of
taking them off! We've got all winter to do it. Keep posting
pic's, it's what keeps us all going!

Was there a reason why you didn't paint the K-member first?
Just curious.

Don’t know how correct you want to be, but the metal cover on the inner fenders should be black, and the slash shield covers should be black.

Yes it will be nice to start putting parts back. Makes the effort more rewarding. Thanks for the comment.

I had taken the metal covers off and cleaned /primed them both. I put them back on for the painting. I wasn't sure because mine were painted gold under all the years of dirt and grime, so I assumed they were gold. I knew the slash shields were black but Dave didn't mask off when he painted. Not a big mistake, I will correct to black. Thanks for the heads up.
What color should the front sway bar be? Gold or Black?

I am still torn between removing the K member to rebuild my front end and then mount the engine/trans to install from below. That is why I didn't paint first. What is your experience on the engine bottom up install?

Just for fun, this is my 36 Packard 120 that I drove to the car show Sunday. I have owned this car for 4 years and it is a great running car, 282 straight eight, 3 speed. Looks as nice underneath as well.

You will never want to put one in from the top again once you do the install from the bottom up. Preassembly is so much easier, and once it goes in there are only like 8 bolts to lock it in place (4 K frame and 4 trans cross member).

Absolutely! Will be doing it that way again. I opened the trap door in the ceiling, laid 2 2x6`s across 3 rafters. Then put a chain around them, dangling down, hooked the chain hoist on and lifted the front end, slid the engine and transmission under on a floor jack. Then dropped the car down. Tucked the chain in the ceiling, closed the trap door.

That is absolutely what I wanted to see and hear from the Forum. I have had a few responses expalining in detail how to go about the installation from the bottom but your pictures are worth a thousand words. I am leaning your way. Once I get the engine bolted to the K frame, what is the best way to balance the whole K frame + engine assembly while lifting up to line up the bolts to fasten to the frame?

And I fully agree with dsd and 440.

Can you safely install it from the top? Of course, lots of people do it all the time. BUT, in my opinion, you have so much more control installing from the bottom. Plus, installing from the bottom allows you install all accessories on the engine. This means you won't be leaning on sensitive, freshly painted fenders either to do it.
