My Bee has color!!!

I know it's too late now but whenever I buy 2 or more gallons first thing I do is mix them together. That way it will all be the same. Anyway it looks great! A couple of years ago I did a 68 Hemi Super Bee in sunfire yellow for a customer. Here's some pictures.

The 68 looks great. My 2nd gallon of yellow looks more vibrant. The first color, which is in the engine compartment, I believe is the correct shade. Unfortunately when I got the paint initially they only gave me a gallon and said that would do the whole car. Being my first car I’ve ever painted I didn’t know any better. So the first gallon was gone before I even got the second.

I would look at the formula on the cans. It's a solid color and should NOT be that
far off! One of those mixes are wrong. at least figure out which one is wrong and
get your money back. Yes, you should have mixed everything together, but they
mixed something wrong. Check the two formulas!

The first can does not have a sticker on it with the formula. The second does. There is also a small sticker that says, once paint is sprayed they are not responsible

Some jobbers put the formula sticker on the inside of the label. Check there.

I know no one told you this, but what painters usually do is mix up a small amount of paint
and spray a "Card or panel and then clear it. Wait for it to dry and see if they're happy with
the color. Looks like two different colors to me. Like I said, one of those gallons is not your
paint code. Sorry that happened! You did a great job though!

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on painting your car. It looks like a great job! I have never yet had the balls to paint a car, so my hats off to you sir! Well done!

Now, to paint differences: I agree with some other comments that that two gallons shouldn't be that far off. Here is something to consider: How much work is it to repaint the under hood areas? I know it is extra work and a pain in the butt, but it is still relatively easy before you bolt stuff in the engine compartment. If it is going to bug you every time you pop open your hood, bite the bullet now and you'll be glad you did later!

Regardless of what choice you make, congrats again on a great job!

Thank you, I really appreciate everyone’s replies.
Hsorman: Thank you for your feedback. I’ve thought about both. Last night after painting I was set on not fixing it. I’m sure after a few days I may consider lightly sanding the engine compartment and spraying that. Ultimately, it’s my car and I can look at it and know how much work I put into it and when I see those little defects it reminds me of the process I went through. Fortunately the areas I painted with that first can will all be covered by carpet or trunk pads or Parcel tray covering. I just wanna make sure I save and keep enough of this second can of paint to get the fenders hood and trunk lid done.

Agree. Interior and trunk - who cares? It won't really be noticeable, and even with a shade difference, there is a key break there between the exterior and interior. Under the hood, however, the exterior paint color more "flows" into the under hood areas.

100% agree - get those done first! Even if you run out of paint and need to get more for the under hood area (if you choose to paint it), you can run back out and get a quart or so and test a small patch first to ensure it has a similar hue.

Good luck and keep moving on!

I’m wondering which of the two yellows is correct. When I told the guy the code he said well there’s a couple different versions of this based on the year. I guess one version is 69 to 74. I wonder if the version of yellow up to/through 68 is different? The second yellow is definitely much more vibrant. The first one is more of a pale yellow

Don't hold me to this, but faint memory is that the more pale yellow is the older version.

View attachment 1041060 I mentioned in an earlier post that my second gallon of Y2 didn’t match. Of course I didn’t see this until it was sprayed down the side of the car. Well here is the difference. I’m bummed but at this point I’m not planning to fix it. Doesn’t Y2 translate to 2 shades of Yellow? Lol. Sorry I have to laugh or I’ll cry.
Go get another quart and respray the engine bay... help ya sleep at night

Curious what you found out about the color differences. The engine bay almost looks like Y3 from 69 and 70. It was called yellow gold. It's your car, but if it were mine and all the work that went into it, I would definitely respray the engine compartment. Wouldn't be that hard at this point in the game.....

Now that I’ve been away from it for a few days I am leaning towards respraying the front. Unfortunately the first can did not have a label for the paint code. The second did which says Sunfire yellow.

When I restored a 68 Coronet 500 Convertible it was a Y2 car, and the second colour you got is the one that looks closest to what I had put on my car, I matched my paint to the original Y2 on the steering wheel saddle up under the dash so it was most likely fairly accurate. The paint in engine compartment does not look right at all.

Thank you. I was wondering. Mine was faded really bad everywhere.

Some pics of her out of the booth.

I have witnessed 2 versions of the same paint code (FY1), one version was based on a lead paint code. The lead version was distinctly different, more green.

I have a 66 Corvette that is Sunfire Yellow - always believed the Chrysler pale yellow from the late 60s was pretty much the same. Take your empty can back to the paint jobber. They can use the residue in it even if dry, to match a quart of paint up for respraying the engine compartment. With the 90 deg break at the fender edge, even if off just a hair no one will ever see it but they should be able to do a custom mix to match the cans remnants or determine what code they originally followed.

The culmination of the last 3 years of body work came together as I got ready to spray color (Y2 Sunfire yellow) on the exterior of my 69 Bee. Well, I did it!!! A few small problems during the process but I worked them out. The biggest of those was I had about 2 1/2 or three coats on with the Original gallon Of Y2 I bought. I bought another gallon today from the paint store where I got the first one. Sprayed down the quarter panel and it is slightly different. Before I decided to get upset, I decided to keep painting and using it anyway. I also noticed some small imperfections that sparked memories from over the last couple years of working in it night and day. The literal blood, sweat, and tears shed during all of the work I’ve done. I put the final coat on with the new paint and now I am going to put clear on and call it mine.
Beautiful! This is my favorite stage of a restore. It signifies culmination of so much work and the begging of the reassembly.

Well, I decided to re-shoot the engine compartment to match the color. Also shot the hood and side scoops. Well 1 side scoop.
