So I just swapped out my original 383 for a 440 with a performer 4 barrel and installed my air cleaner and pretty sure it’s not going to fit under hood. Just wondering why GTX came with 440 and same air cleaner and it fit. Is it my intake? Performer to tall?

I think its the intake, did you measure the height? I think there are threads on this.

Hi & HoHoHo Ya Know..............................
Bytheway.................
Isn't A 383 A "B" Block & A 440 Is A "RB" Block ? The RB's Have A Taller Deck Height For Starters & Ill Bet The Aftermarket Intake Does Too.
How About A Lower / Offset Pan For The Air Cleaner May Work. Don't know offhand who sells em . Nice Ride !! MoPar2Ya! John

Yes that is true but these cars came as GTX with an RB 440 and this air cleaner came from a 1967 GTX with an RB 440. So I am only thinking it’s the manifold??? That’s my guess?

A standard Performer isn't very tall, Performer RPM is tall... How much curvature does the cowl have? Look straight from the top of the radiator to the cowl..... It's not uncommon for the air cleaner to sit higher than the fender tops but the hood has more curve/bulge that you think....

Okay I will check in the morning and try just surprised how much taller the air cleaner was I hope your right! Thanks

I just checked, 67 & 68 440 use the same Pt# intake, the 68 intake is virtually the same height as a performer...

What carb?
What base on the air cleaner?

That is not a 67 gtx aircleaner either. But it will fit underhood with stock parts.

Edelbrock carburetor stock base as I was told it came from a 1967 GTX. Don’t have the part number or where to know where to look on the air cleaner to find part number. Do you know what the air cleaner part number is? It appears to look the same as I have seen on 1967 GTX?

I think you have a 68 air cleaner, pretty sure the 67 carb has the smaller neck, 68 is the same as modern Holley's & Edelbrocks... first Link is a 68 air cleaner.

Second link is a 67 air cleaner... Notice the stamped ribs.... They are slightly different...

Damn dude I purchased years ago before I knew about nicks and forbbodies! I feel dumb but I was mistaken. Thanks for the clarification. I wonder if 68 is taller? Which one is worth more? Do you know? Thanks so much for your help!

Isn't a stock 66 or 67 intake shorter than a 68 up? I have a 66 and a 69 stock intake and the 66 is shorter than the 69.

Per the parts manual 67 & 68 are the same part number.....

It's possible but I doubt it... No idea on value, most folks in the know avoid the 67 because of the smaller hole for the carb throat..

BTW Absolutely no reason to feel dumb, theres far more important stuff in life that old air cleaners.... LOL...

I can't seem to find my notes from when I went through intake/hood clearance at the moment, but I believe an Edelbrock Performer RPM is almost 2" taller than a stock cast intake. I had to use a 1.5" drop air cleaner base along with a shorter element to get the hood closed.

I'm no air clean expert, but here are some observations:

1) The 440 Performer is 3/4" taller than the factory 178 intake
2) The original GTX air cleaner was pretty close to the hood. It left an imprint in the hood pad
3) Not all air cleaner bases are the same, and I think a "383" base will sit higher than a "440" base.
4) Some performance dual snorkel lids are taller than others.

You can get it to work, but you'll need to match up the parts.
