Was going out for a late night drive. slowly started to smell something burning that I can tell wasn’t coolant, oil, fluid etc. The dreaded smell of copper wire and insulation....

Pulled over and the cabin started rushing with smoke. Smoke and flames in the engine bay. Quickly pulled off the ground cable and grabbed the extinguisher.

The starter wire rubbed through and shorted to the block. I was parked directly over dry brittle grass as well. If I didn’t have my extinguisher I think I very may well of lost the car tonight.

Please if you don’t carry an extinguisher in your car, go to Home Depot or Lowe’s, you can get a pack of 2 for 50 bucks. We aren’t driving 2020 Cadillacs or Camrys; especially those of us that Daily drive these 40-50 year old car. It’s almost a guarantee something will go wrong eventually..

Thanks for reminding me. I've been thinking of buying the halogen extinguisher to save the mess.

"Halogen"? :)
You might have been thinking about halon - but that's been banned for years, too.
The "clean agent" extinguishers that are out there now (like the ones you've linked to) are great,
but pricy as hell.
The larger typical clean agent extinguisher we sell for commercial kitchens pushes $1000, for example.
Yes, there's none of that yellow nasty powder mess after use, but dang man - I can't afford the dang
things in my own home, so conventional 10lb ABC types are around my house.

Thanks for the PSA ! I've been prepared since 1988. Good and handy in the Bee. In the Bird I have a 2lbr in the console.

Yep... I keep my Halon hoard for airplanes...
Oddly enough, it is still allowed in certain applications to "maintain" old existing halon suppression
systems - we're just not allowed to modify or recharge them at all.
Reminds me....and this may explain a few things about me :):
I have actually been in a large computer room at a university that was protected by a halon system -
that some really bright factory "expert" accidentally fired off WHILE WE WERE IN THERE.
As a result, I can tell you firsthand how halon works on a fire...
Does a darn good job on humans that need oxygen, too.

Oh, what happened to that dude once we got out of there?
Let's just say he outran me to his car - all the way across the quad.
Some of the others thought I was just play-chasing him and had a good laugh.
I wasn't...

Airplane fire... master off, close all air inlets, find extinguisher, pull pin on extinguisher, take the deepest damn breath you ever have in your life and hold. Pull trigger and spray in direction of fire. Keep holding breath.. keep holding.. open window and stick your head out for fresh air. Fire still burning, glide that fawker in..... :praying:

Daytona Turbo Z?

have one of the Halen extinguishers in my satellite. Boy they’re expensive but promise they’re worth it. A dry extinguisher may save your engine bay, but you better pray it doesn’t all go down the intake... especially if it’s a high dollar build

Dry chemical?

A dry chemical one I had laying around awhile ago. Thought it’d be better than nothing. Was worried it’d be too small!

Did they use heads from Mitsubishi on those?? I thought that didn't occur at Chrysler on other models until around 1990.

I wouldn't hesitate to own a Daytona if I was in the market for another car. I had an '84 Shelby and liked it, but it only had 110 hp.

I haven't seen any of the Daytona models for a very long time. I suppose most were used and abused my multiple young owners and then sent off to the salvage yard.

Thanks for sharing.

The Daytona's were either mostly or all American, (extended K cars). I had one exactly like yours, even he same color(Flash Red)??? Mine was a 5spd with leather, digital dash, trip navigator, power lumbar driver seat, etc.... I loved it. Beat the hell out of it and was my daily driver for many years. It passed the 305,000 mile mark before I sold it. I like your purple beast next to it as well. If you check my photo garage, you will see proof! I'm glad you saved yours!

Correct. My GLH Turbo had the same drivetrain as the Turbo Z and it was all American (2.2 turbo), including the
POS transaxle. :)

:thankyou:

Halon is exactly what I thought this was also.....I have only had one experience in my working career with Halon....didn't end well.

My co-worker (he was training me at the site) forgot to isolate the tanks when running the dummy fire-drill. You guessed it, he triggered the halon in the Computer Room (all sealed shut for security)..... I have never seen people move so fast - flinging open doors and windows to escape the gas cloud. :D Halon itself is not toxic, but it does consume oxygen at an alarming rate ....even the oxygen in your lungs.

And the only time I used my powder extinguisher was also the result of an 'accident'.....I was doing donuts around a skid pan, when the extinguisher broke loose, and caught my shoe. It went off all at once. Looked like a bunch of Columbian Drug dealers had blown a couple of kilo's in my A100.
Funny at the time, but what a mess.

:xscuseless:

It was shortly after this wheelie good air under the rear that the extinguisher let rip...

There's actually several "replacements". Inergen, FM200, FE-13, Novec....
Thanks Ed, I think that is part of what you do & or did for a living. I only know because where ever I worked, we were mandatory to be part of the Fire Brigade & Emergency Response Teams. I also worked in a computer room that monitored and controlled all of the fire system devices and systems. I was also sent to school to learn how to program procedures that had to happen when alarms came in such as smoke doors releasing and such; (writing code). Our chief was a former New York City fire chief and we had to attend training for a couple days at the fire academy. I loved crawling through a multistory building in a turnout coat and full gear including Scott packs and boots, with a blacked out mask dragging a charged fire line in the middle of summer; NOT!

By the way, ever since my first car, all of my vehicles had fire extinguishers in them. :D
