Hey guys, I’ve been doing some research on cars that got the red painted brake drum faces and one thing that seems to be sporadic is when this process actually started. I have heard anything from 2/1968 to 8/1969. I’m just wondering if it would be correct for my April built 1968 Charger. Has anyone seen any ‘68 models with the red drums?

There is probably a Factory Service Bulletin floating around the internet that will help answer your question.

Unfortunately the only shot I have of the bulletin, oldest revision date on it is 3-26-1969 so it was published originally sometime before that. Would think if it was done on '68's they would have had everything revised long before well into the '69 model year... but I've been wrong at guessing Ma Mopar before..

I’ve searched around and the service bulletins that I have found was 8/1969 and 5/1969. Then someone commented that they saw one from 2/1968 but wasn’t able to provide proof. I searched as much as I could but wasn’t sure if any of the gurus on here knows for sure when it started...

Flag notes 6 and 7 were added 8/15/69 as per the revision history block. Flag note 6 is for the paint. Flag note 6 on the drawing is pointing to the face of the drum.

I would say that the drums weren't painted in 1968 based on that revision history.

Yep.. you read better than me. By that I probably should haven't done my Feb built '69 Bee.

Here is an answer to your question from Mopar Muscle magazine off an old For Road Runner Only forum

Note the red paint on the face of this rear brake drum. A Chrysler Passenger Cars-Procedure and Materials engineering document dated January 31, 1969, states, "Apply a 2-inch Wide Paint Band in Toward Center Per P.S.3840 With 3404653 Enamel (Styled Wheels Only). No Paint Allowed on Wheel Attachment Studs or on Wheel Contact Area of Drum." "Styled" wheels refer to Magnums or to the Rallyes in this vehicle's case. We have seen original cars where the red paint was still wet and dripping when the wheels were installed-evident by the amount of the paint on the wheel. We have so far confirmed this procedure on '69 -'71 model year cars.

I'm sorry that I don't know who to give credit for these pictures, but I had saved them awhile ago, most likely from this site. As you can see, the factory was very careful where they placed the paint..
