I am going to be replacing the bearings and seals in mine, and need to figure out how to set up end play, with out the special tool. Or can that even be done?
Can't seem to find any info on a tapered axle set-up. Any links to a tutorial?

Call Dr Diff and he can help you on this. I bought the green bearings and was all set.

There are no green bearings for a tapered axle. Thank god! Tapered axle is different adjustment than a 1965 and newer flanged axle. They are both easy and not the brain twister perplexing problem that they are made up to be.

Do you have a factory service manual? It explains it in there. You don’t really need the special tools.

They are adjusted using shims. Dr. Diff should have them if you need extras.

As long as you get the correct length the standard style flanged axle shafts with Green bearings will fit the early housing. They have to be installed without the inner seals.

Cass sent me inner seals along with the flanged axle replacements. With everything needed to complete the conversion IIRC I had around $400 total into it. (Post #224 in the link below)

I would just replace the bearings/races and seals if I were the OP.

I have no intention of converting, or upgrading anything. I'm just going to replace bearings and seals. I already have all the parts.

Just an update. Replaced bearings, races, seals, and shimmed correctly. Axle is now quiet. Bearings may have been OK, as there was .040+ end play, but since I already had new bearings, I replaced them.
Thanks for all the advice.

The end play for the key axle is .006 What year is for car. Remove all end play first and put .006 on the right.

Sorry for all the photo my hand are cool it maybe +4 today
