Are the little tabs on the bearings once in the rods and mains orientated on the same side of the assembly or opposite? I took the engine apart a year ago but only marked the caps and didn't but didn't add a second mark on the rods/mains.

Many Thanks Auggie

Tabs go on the same side... Mains should be marked for location & orientation from the factory... Rods typically are stamped for location..

Many rod bearings are marked for rod and rod cap. The last set I put in said .......lower for the cap and upper for the rod. They can be different as the last eng I did the rod bearings were marked and it made a difference as I put them in wrong since they will go in but the bearing sits off to the side a tad and its off more if in the wrong way and can butt against the crank. It actually caused about a .010 difference in the rod side play since the bearing was off center a tad even though they go in either way. In wrong it had about .008 rod side play. Changed back to in correct it has .019 rod side play. If they are not marked then them bearings may be made to go in either way on the rods but I dont remember any like that. On the mains of course the one with the oil feed hole is the top one that goes in the block. Ron

What brand(s) rod bearings are marked upper/lower?

The last set I did came with our Scat crank we used in my sons 451. I cant remember what brand was on the bearing box but I will ask my son if he remembers when I talk to him. Ron

Clevite bearings are, but it may depend on the bearing type. 1/2 and 3/4 groove main have the upper/lower markings, and some of the rod bearings that have the locating pin hole, often used with aluminum rods or narrowed performance bearings.

Now today I looked at an older set of Clevite 77 rod bearings and they were not marked for upper and lower. They were marked for .010 under crank but did not say which was which. The rod bearings with the Scat crank I put in about 6 months ago were marked top & bottom. Ron

Now that you say that the rod bearings that were marked top & bottom with the Scat crank did have the hole in the lower bearing for after market aluminum rods. The clevite bearings I looked at today did not have the hole in the lower bearing and were not marked. I had forgot about that.

Adding a picture to this thread to show what it looks like when tabs are wrong, cap installed backwards. Hopefully you can see the bearing shell and cap are now shifted over the wrong way. That would cause very bad interference on a stock undercut crankshaft journal and very rapid failure on an aftermarket crank with radius journals from extremely bad interference.

OK, then I must have them in correctly as mine are not as your picture shows. Many thanks for your effort.
