sure grip is not so sure

8 3/4 sure grip is no longer spinning both wheels. It is the cone type. Can it be rebuilt, or is there another way of repairing it?
 
I have not heard of any ways to repair those. And I've had a couple of them thru the years, and I'm not a big fan. Much prefer a clutch-style unit. Dr. Diff has them new for $395 USD. Best way to go by far in my opinion.
 
You cut material off the small diameter of the cones so they can go deeper into the pockets in the carrier... Then you shim the side gears away from the cones to reduce backlash with the spider gears... In the end you had a patched up poorly designed sure grip that'll work a little longer.... But realize it has been grinding up metal & running it through your gears since day one & by now it has ground up so much metal it no longer works... Do you really want to keep grinding up metal & feeding it to your gears & bearings?
 
Got a cone style carrier in my 2000 dakota. Works real good . I'll take your old unit should you decide not to use it.

I've been machining these things since around mid 80's and no, there's only one way to make it work again.....so long as someone hasn't been trying to make it lock up again by pouring the chilli to it. That will only make things much worse and usually not fixable.

I can tell you what Rusty once said he takes off lol. What he takes off is way more than I think is needed.
