I recently purchased a Jones/Moroso Mechanical Tach for our N/SS car. I already have the distributor, but am really struggling to find a 6 foot long cable that has the square, female end for the tach as well as the Mopar ignition end on the other side. I saw an older post in the archives regarding this. Any ideas where I may find one of these cables? Thanks in advance as always.

if you want real moroso cable they are hard to find especially for mopar. You need a .152 tang into distributor i would just buy new from internet speedo shops. google it..

I needed a cable for my Sun tach. Took the tach and distributor to a local shop and had a cable made. Used a piece of rope to confirm the required length of cable.

A wanted thread is the best place to start. Nice lookin race car.

As i understand it, the tach turns in the oposite direction of a speedo, so the cable has to be wound different than normal speedo, has to be mechanical tach cable.
But i would expect a competant speedo shop to know that.

you would indicate the rotation of the windings of the cable naturally. yes it would be a custom cable for moroso tach from a speedo shop and they may or may not know Big block CCW for mopar but i would think a competent shop would . moroso tach doesn't matter which way it rotates. if you look at any moroso catalog there was not a tach for specific rotation...

Join the vintage moroso facebook page and ask someone if they cable for sale.

Bob's speedo service , in michigan, says they can build whatever you need. And Aircraft spruce looks like they have a good selection. I would guess that having something made will be a lot more money than finding an old used one.

I had one made by Texas Industrial Electric Co. The guy on the phone knew exactly what I needed. Relatively cheap and quick turnaround. The one they made for me looks like a speedometer cable though, it does not have the metal sheath. Not sure if they offer that type of housing or not. It's much lighter without it though, the metal clad one I have feels like it weighs like 5 lbs and that's for a shorter (4') small block one. A metal-covered BB cable would probably be 10lbs!

You could also give this guy a call and see if has one laying around or knows where to get them.

I might have one shoot me a PM with the actual length you need.

Missed it. I found one in my own stash...ironically. Never knew I had it. I tried to hook it up, but the square, female end that goes into the tach is too large. The one on the ebay ad looks the same. Do they make different size square ends, or is my tach's male, square end worn? When I hook it up to the car, the tach needle vibrates back and forth pretty badly. Tried a second tach, and it did the same thing.

I do believe they bounce, it’s a mechanical connection after all. Should smooth out at higher RPMs? If no then there has to be something that’s not right. Have you tried to lubricate it and see what happens?

Have not lubed it. I can tell that the cable is still solid. If I hold one end, I can't turn the other. It really appears that the male, square end of the tach is spinning inside the female, square end of the cable. I have a Stewart Warner cable in my '64 Fury. It works perfectly and smoothly. I hooked the new Jones Tach up to that distributor to check for accuracy.

Only other thing I can offer is to put the small end in a drill and see if it’ll spin the tach like its supposed to.
