A833 wont separate from engine

Im lifting the engine in my 64 Polara and it refuses to let go of the transmission. I have them seperated almost an inch but more than that is impossible.

Could the input shaft be siezed by rust to the clutch? Does anyone have a good tip for this or should i just try and remove the pressure plate from underneath and tackle this problem later?

Have you unbolted the bellhousing or the transmission body itself.

More information is required here. Standard bellhousing?, scattershield?, all other components disconnected - clutch linkage etc?
 
I have unbolted the bellhousing from the engine, starter is removed. Its a standard bellhousing with no scattershield.

The idea was to leave the transmission in the car, so clutch linkage is still connected.
 
Guys have pulled motors and left automatics in cars but I've never known someone to leave a 4-speed in the car. I think if its moved an inch the problem is something else hanging you up - motor mount, engine hitting the K-member or something like that. Personally, I'd drop everything back in, unbolt the trans from the bell and pull the trans out first. It'll make for an easier install too - bolting everything together first. Getting a trans properly aligned with everything out of the car can be a chore. It'd be a real bitch trying to do it with the trans in the car !!
 
It takes about 20 minutes to drop a 4 speed,,,, Juss say'n:lol:
 
I hope that transmission is supported, or one it's gonna hit the ground and rip the rubber mount off and two it's possibly going to bend the clutch disc center with you lifting and twisting on the engine. Should have pulled eng/trans as an assembly..
 
Bolt it back up. Then unbolt the transmission and remove it first, or remove the whole thing as one assembly. It very likely binding right now, hopefully you haven’t bent anything.

Meaning - alignment is absolutely critical to install a four-speed transmission.....as it is the removal.
Make life easy on yourself, and remove the transmission first if removal height clearance is an issue.
 
If you are lifting the engine, you need a floor jack under the trans to get the weight off so the engine can be pulled ahead. If the trans is hanging by its own weight, it will be binding too much to be pulled out. Also, you need it supported to not break off the bearing retainer.
 
I have left manual transmission in cars while lifting engine before without a problem, so i feel there is something else wrong here. I do have a jack under the transmission to take weight off it and im using a load leveler to get everything in line when lifting. There is sufficent room to slide the engine forward without hitting anything but it still just slips off about an inch (and this is easy).

But i think ill just rebolt the transmission to the engine and lift the whole thing out and sort this out on the shop floor.

Do i get away with just removing the shifter or do i need to remove the complete linkage?

Some of the work you’re describing doing takes literally a couple of minutes so I’m wondering why it seems like you want to take short cuts which usually just leads to damage and or more time to do the job than if you just do things in the proper sequence.

Like others and myself have already said which you’re not wanting to believe for some reason is that your problem is most likely binding. Your input shaft probably goes into the pilot bearing about 1.5-2” so after you pull back your Bellhousing 3/4-1” the pilot shaft of your transmission is instantly binding in the pilot bushing. It would only need to be misaligned a 1/4 of one degree and have ten pound force on it to make your job near impossible to do whilst being in the engine bay of your car.

If you want to you could probably pull the transmission out first while in the car, highly recommend a hoist for this as it really hard to do while lying on your back, or just pull it all out as one assembly and remove the trans while it’s all on the floor. Unbolt the trans from the bell, put long 5 or 6” bolts back in the top bolt holes the wiggle the crap out of the transmission while trying to pull it back. Once separated you’ll know, then you can remove the bolts and it’ll come right out.

Have you removed the stamped dust cover from the bottom of the bellhousing?
 
gentlemen put a scissors jack under the engine take everthing off the trans so nothing is the way unbolt the trans lower eng and trans pull out, its easy to pull the trans first if your on jackstands I assume you unbolted starter unbolted headers clutch linkage fan shroud etc :thumbsup:

Something is binding , i have pulled 13 speeds out of Class 8 no problem , As long as you have the alignment correct , Hopefully grooves which align inside the clutch plates are not worn or missaligned Go back to the K.I.S.S. method if your fighting it to much .....take MOTOR and Trans out together ...just my thoughts Good luck ✌
 
I agree with viper , I have pulled HD truck trannies and had less of a fight with them other then a pto, than some light duty ones. I had a 4L80 hung on the dowel pins, they were froze in the bell housing . I took a air hammer and a long skinny punch and gently rattled them out while I had a helper handle the trans jack.. old cars are usually a breeze just take your time and double check yourself( probably did already ) drink a beer or cocktail then proceed relaxed!
