Hey guys im 68greasemnky I am the third owner of a 1968 Plymouth Roadrunner that was handed down to me by my father in the early 90's. He purchased it back in the early 70's. Apparently something happened to the stock 383 and it was replaced with a 360. I soon after replaced it with a built up 440. As many of you know old parts don't usually like newer stronger parts. Shortly after the transmission went out and the old 727 was replaced with a B&M unit. You can see the chain of events coming. Driveshaft went out next and was replaced with a more stout aluminum unit. Yes you guess it the rear end went out also but about this time was when it all stopped for many reasons but I kept the car. So fast forward 25 years give or take engine still turns but the car has not been started. I've been out of this scene for that many years and many of the shops that I use to frequent are long gone. I need your help im in the So Cal, San Gabriel Valley area and I'm searching for a reputable shop to have bodywork done. I'd like to have the rear quarter panels reskinned as right before I stopped working on the car I removed a ton bondo from a "previous repair." Also the rear bottom glass rail has some rust I'm guessing from the vinyl top being undermined that needs tending to. Lastly looking for a shop that could rebuild the old 8 3/4 or if you could recommend a more stout upgrade. Looking forward to hearing from you guys.

Welcome from Missouri!! Nice ride!!

Welcome from Ct. The rear up grade is a Dana 60, Strange is a good unit. A factory Dana 60 is a little cheaper.

How much bondo is a ton? I'll tell ya up front body work aint cheap anymore & your area is higher than most... If the metal isn't rusty it might be cheaper to have the dents worked out & skim coated with filler...

Fully body & paint including hanging quarters is likely 20K++++

And I'm guessing the previous replacement engine was a 361 not a 360... A 360 is a small block & wouldn't have bolted up to the trans... A 361 is just like a 383 with a smaller bore...

welcome to FBBO nice road runner project keep us posted on your progress

nice car....I would drive it just like that

If you've got plenty of cash, Strange rear ends are a good choice. Otherwise, you could probably just put in a rebuilt center section with the gears of your choice, couple bearings and seals, and you'd be good. Upgrade with Strange axles if you're making a lot of horsepower, but probably not needed for street tires.

If your running an Automatic you don't need a Dana... 8 3/4 has a huge advantage in the fact you can have extra pumpkins with different gears... Taking a long distance cruise this weekend? Throw some 2.76 open gears in & head out on the highway.... Just having fun on the backroads or at the track? Throw in a 3:91 or 4:10 Sure Grip... I use to swap gears in less than 30 minutes...

Welcome from the North Coast. Nice project! Haul that beast out to Ohio; I have a great body and paint guy who can perform magic on her for under $5K.

Welcome eh.jpg

Welcome aboard Sir, from the middle of the mitten. To have it "reskinned" can get awful expensive very fast and if done wrong, is very hard to fix. A good body person can patch and pound your original metal for a lot less $$$$. Best of luck with your project and please keep us informed.

welcome to FBBO from NorCal Sierras

It depends what "went out" in the 8 3/4.

That unit should be fine behind a 440 up to about 650 HP.
