I would venture an aerodynamic guess: the wagon generated less drag than the 2 door. With a sharp cut-off, flow separation and turbulence occur, whereas the smoother slope of the wagon would generate less drag. Hence, Kamm-back everything, those cute venetian curved blind above the back of many wagons, and multiple useless phony "wings" glued to the trunk lid, imitating the Kamm. "Course, I have been many times wrong before...
PS: same thing for pick-ups: less drag with the tail gate...UP! Down, turbulence and drag are induced.
