So, I'm working my way through the ....interesting... wiring repairs that have been done on my Charger prior to owning it. Wirenuts have NO place on an automobile....

I recently had the cluster out to replace bulbs and bypass the dead dash dimmer switch, and the wiring on the back of the wiper switch looked correct (and I don't think the dash had ever been out before I took it apart).

I know stuff under the hood has been monkeyed with, and the wiper motor looks new(er). When I turn on the wiper switch, the wipers are simply....ON. At a fairly fast rate. No change when using different switch positions.

Is it possible it has a standard motor, even though the car has a 3 speed system? Or am I looking at some other issue somewhere (mis-repaired wiring, etc)?

I don't plan on driving it in the rain much if I can help it, but I still like it when stuff works...

First question. Is it a three speed motor? Do you know what a two speed looks like and what a three speed looks like? Second question. Is there a white Rectangular resistor attached to the back of the wiper switch?

Yes, theres a resistor

Photo from pre-removal so I'd get the wires back in the right spots lol.

As for the motor, I'll have to Google what they look like...not sure if this view helps any:

With the wiper switch in the off position a three speed switch will have 3 detent positions. A two speed wiper switch will have two

Yeah, it's a 3 speed switch, has the right number of detents, and the broadcast sheet shows 3 speed option. Guess I need to get the right motor.

Thank you!

Not only does the wiper motor have to be 3 speed.....so does the arms .....I have wiper motor and linkage if u need them send me a PM

So...if it works now, is there a chance it has the wrong linkage in it as well? Or would this 2 speed motor attach to the 3 speed linkage/trans? I can't imagine - given the history I know about the car (strictly "used car" mentality, not "classic collectible") - that they would have gone to the trouble to swap all that out. My guess is they went to NAPA and said "need a motor", and slapped in what they got...

I would guess that they probably just swap the motor out to have wipers to make it pass inspection... Or just work in general....they weren't as picky years ago if the wipers work they were happy

This is a 3 speed off of a C body. It looks almost exactly like a B body 3 speed. You can see how the motor "lays down", compared to yours.

The linkage is the same for 2 and 3 speeds.
I am amending this statement to say I am pretty sure they are the same. What makes you say they are different, 3white74?

Roger that, thanks everyone! Something else to hunt for while I wait for the winter road salt to go away.... :)

Pivots are the same .....I believe 2 speed and 3 speed arms have different part numbers....never compared myself been told that by many

The part number for a 1970 B body three speed wiper motor is 2983116. The part number should be stamped into the motor housing

3white 74, when you say arms are you referring to the arms on the outside of the windshield that hold the wiper blades, or the linkage arms inside the car under the dash?

The wiper linkage's inside the car that the back of the wiper motor hooks to

That is what I thought you were referring to. I am going to state that I am not sure one way or the other. If it were me and I couldn’t find positively if the arms were different or not, I would find a correct motor, install it and see what happens

Triple green 500 .....I have a 3 speed wiper motor for you if interested send me a PM

I would say the only thing that different arms could affect would be the degree of sweep. To make sure the wipers wouldn’t be sweeping too far, with the motor installed you could take the Wiper blades off and check to see if the sweep would be correct. If the degree of sweep is too great, the wiper blades might hit the body of the car.

You absolutely never know what previous owners could have done to a car. I think just about everybody has seen stuff that they just shook their head at trying to figure out what somebody was thinking. But it seems pretty unlikely that somebody would go through all the trouble Of swapping out a wiper motor and linkage arms. Obviously installing just the correct motor would save you at least a couple days work. It just seems like a lot of added work to put in the wrong motor
