Im in the works for my next restoration. Looks like I'm going to do it.
Im doing a deal for a older Lincoln SA 200 welder. A guy has one and its on a trailer.
God only knows how many of these welders Lincoln sold over the years. The older ones like the one im thinking of getting have a big following.
They were the pipe liners welder to have. I know the latest models had diesel engines but the older ones have a flathead 4 cylinder gas engine.
I love the sound of that engine, you could run that machine all day every day
The older ones had all copper windings, They generated only DC and they are famous for a stable arc which made them the darling of Pipe welders.
Today everyone wants a Diesel drive and AC power for lights and tools
I had a SA200 for some years and sold it when I went to a single rear wheel smaller truck
Im planning on restoring this one to from the new factory condition.
Im seriously thinking that 2021 is my last year of welding fab work. I will be 69 in two months and its been a long road.
Im swapping a guy im friends with my Lincoln Ranger 275, which is a two cylinder air cooled CC/CV machine. A excellent machine that can weld 5/32 wire all day long
Im giving the guy my LN 25 wire feeder and a spool gun.
He is getting a score and he knows it.
The thing is he is a young guy and wants to do what I did and that's hustle.
He'll be doing what I did all those years and thats work two jobs, so he doesn't need a water cooled machine and my machine is more suited for a average pickup truck.

I told my wife my plans to restore this old welder, she thinks im crazy and wants to know what im going to do with it when its done. I told her I have no idea and she shook her head.
Women just dont understand.

Tell her that you're giving it to me and we're family. She will understand goombah!

I had a SA200 for about 6 years. Mounted it on a tow truck body on a F250. Had my own portable welding service. I had more work than I knew what to do with. That flat four really could talk when you pulled it down doing heavy plating. I'm thinking it was a Continental engine. You could use a heavy rod and cut plate with it almost as good as using a torch. Very dependable machine. And all my power tools were AC/DC including my flood lights so I was good to go using the supplied DC outlet.

Only time I had trouble with it was on a real cold morning the exciter brushes got frost in them and weren't making contact. Took me awhile to figure it out but never had that happen again.

Good luck with your project.

Will it be this nice when done?

Ive never seen gauges and that extended hood but that machine is the same color as the one im getting, I thought they were all painted gray
If you notice the face plate is red, mine is red also which tells me the particular type of machine.

That extended hood came standard on most of the gas engine models. I had one in my service truck that was an early 90's model with the extended hood and gauges. Great machines, just a little noisy if you're working anywhere near them.

Yummy, A "Ranger"!!!!!

I know of an older one. Hood looks like that of the old International tractors. Water cooled 4 banger with DC power outlet and welder. I doubt if it has been started on 20 years but was being stored in side last i saw it.

We had many of that model at work years ago, they just keep on running. All the cars I have built and worked on and I never leaned how to weld. My best friend is a welder and I would tack it up and he would come by and weld it up. Sound like fun to me, keep us posted!!
