Just a quick question for everyone...
My car is a 77 and it has a 400 B with about 30K miles on it.
Do I need to worry about a nylon gear in this engine ?

you can check it by turning the crank and watch the rotor in the disturber best way bring to t d c 0 on timing pointer and line on dampener then watch the rotor as you turn crank backwards and forwards if you have more than 5 deg of play i would replace it. j m o

Replace it for peace of mind. Nylon cam gear I would bet on it. 50k is about the limit on that junk.

I was just saying that it would be good PM so hopefully you don't have to pull the oil pan and pickup to get all the nylon chunks out.

So do you have to lower the oil pan when you pull the front cover ?

If the gear aint spittin chunks then no. If yes well then you know the answer. Good time to lookat bearings and put an oil pump on the old girl. Looks like a clean rig, I hope you are pleasantly surprised.

I bought my 383 magnum Charger with a jumped timing chain ...nylon teeth on the cam sprocket. 77k miles.

All the valves were slightly bent. I've seen worse in other engines.

Anyway, a quality double roller sprockets and chain set costs less than new valves and all that other head work.

I would plan to change it. You'll be able to tell when you remove it if you need to clean out the pan. If it's in tact a new one should be all you need.
I would recommend degreeing the cam when you install the chain.

what is the preferred timing chain set here ? It can be a good one. I plan on keeping this motor and doing many upgrades later down the road.

This one should be good you want to have some adjustment for advance/retard if possible.
This is a really good price too.
You don't know for sure if you'll need it until you install and go to degree the cam.
NOTE: There is a 3 bolt timing set but that is typically only for larger lift performance cams.
