Thinking I wanted to make my 70’ Cuda and 72’ Roadrunner a bit more comfy and was thinking of tilt column. I’ve onlt found one source for the conversion and it looks to be over $1k and that’s just for the column. Anyone ever do a conversion or have a suggestion?

If you want a bolt in your choices are limited to Flaming River and Ididit I think. I can't stand either of those companies so I made one myself using a hot rod column, 33" I think. It isn't real hard but does take some work. The 2 main areas of concern are;

1. How it attaches to the dash frame support
2. how it attaches to the steering box

I used the original bracket from my old column along with the spot welded mounting blocks off the old column. Most of the hot rod columns are made of like a pot metal and I don't think you can weld to them so I made clamps that go around the column shaft.

for #2 I used a Borgensen adapter

Ok, that sounds like what I was thinking. My main concern is the harness to from the column to dashes wiring. I’m not good with electrical, but making parts fit is more of my thing. Were you able to use a stock steering wheel or forced to go aftermarket? I enjoy tuff wheels in my mopars and have a few stashed away for when I’m ready to drive my cars.

The wiring in most if not all of the hot rod columns is the same as a GM and there are a lot of diagrams online to show you how to hook them up.

I used a stock crush can, they will go right onto the column BUT in the stock configuration the front lip of the can goes into the column housing so it is a seamless transition, on a hot rod column, the upper collar is smaller than the stock E body collar so you need to make a transition piece. This was probably the hardest thing for me to do.

That looks really good, nice work!

I’m thinking of shorting the collar can anyway as I needed a little bit of room since I’m most likely going to put a rollbar in the Cuda. I have a few parts columns, so I’m sure I can figure out the brackets and have parts that might fit with the installation. If I can do it for less than 1/2 of the others guys, I will be very stoked. Thank you for the info and pi! Now I just have to scour eBay for a column.

Oh you can do it for far less than 1/2, a column from either of those 2 companies is $1K ish, I paid $99 for my column, another $100 for the adapter, everything else was labor.

I've seen a few knockoff flaming rivers on eBay. Look decent and are really cheap

I have not seen a cordoba in a yard out here in over 7 years now, and people seem to price parts for those like muscle cars. Figured it might be easier to go another route. Also, were cordoba columns tilt optioned or was telescopic also available with tilt?

I guess some Cordoba's do have tilt and telescoping. But it looks like a direct bolt in for your 72 Road Runner.

I was in the part Biz awhile and can tell you I would never buy an Ididit or Flaming river column (maybe an Ididit if it was 50% off).

sO,
The ad clearly says NEW YORKER, not Cordoba. C-body.

MOPAR 1976 CHRYSLER TELESCOPIC TILT STEERING COLUMN NEW YORKER COLUMN SHIFT
Oops, my bad. But it doesn't have to be a Cordoba column does it oh wise *** one?

I have a tilt out of a 64 Chrysler Crown Coupe. Let Me dig it out and get some pics. You would have to change the shaft at a minimum. If you are interested let me know.

The words affordable and anything B or E body don’t belong together in the same sentence

While not as plentiful as they used to be, what about a tilt column from a '70's Cordoba? (I haven't done it, have heard about others using this column).
FACT.
I have 2 floor shift tilt columns from Cordobas and plan to install one in my '70 Charger.
I modified one for my FrankenDuster many years ago.

Doba column in an a-body, that’s cool! Since my project is in slow mode due to the covid cooties, should have time to hit an early swap meet and check out columns for some ideas.

I'm paring out a 1973 Fury, gonna save the column parts so I can see if I can use some of the mounting parts the replacement column.
