1971 Super Bee Wheel and Tire Dilemma

^^^^not worth the risk AT ALL. You'll completely regret taking that risk when you have a blowout and you end up crashing the car. Safety and function over form at all times. Stay safe...

After doing more research, I discovered that in 1971, a 14x6 Road Wheel became available. Prior to 71 they were only available in 14x5.5. This explains why the 71 Hemi Super Bee, that I mentioned above, was able to be ordered with G70-14 tires on the Road Wheels. In contrast, you could not get G70-14 tires on Rallye wheels because they were not available in 14x6 until 1973. If you wanted 14 inch Rallye in 71 they had to be 14x5.5 with F70-14 (which was the standard wheel size and tire for a Super Bee that year).

In 1971, 15x7 wheels came with G60-15 tires on B Bodies and F60-15 tires on E Bodies. This explains why there is no mention of an F60-15 tire in my 71 Charger/Coronet Operators Manual.

My 71 Bee came with the W21 and U86 options

With a 383 car , when ordering the 15" Wheels and Tires - It also included the S15 option Hemi Suspension , also on my Broadcast sheet

U86 G60 x 15" Raised White Letters - Disc or HD Drum Breakes & HD Suspension (Code S15) Required $146.95
Tires -- Super Bee
Replaces F70 x 14" WSW - Models w/340 & 383 4-bbl. Engines

Personally I think 15" wheels look too small on the 71-74 B bodies, I am planning on running 17" steel wheels on my 71 Charger with the stock hubcaps. I am doing this actually more due to the brakes than the look, I have 15" steel wheels that I would use but they are not going to fit, so I have to go bigger.

Edit: I am pretty sure I am going with the 17" steel wheels and stock hubcaps, not sure what tire but one step at a time.

The 71 Charger Operator Manual says G70-14 requires HD Suspension & Sway Bar. G60-15 requires Extra HD Suspension, Sway Bar and restricted suspension travel. What did they add to the car to restrict suspension travel?

It appears ALL Super Bees would have come with at least HD Suspension with Sway Bar, even if equipped with F70-14 tires. Mine currently does not have a sway bar on it, but a sway bar and some mounting parts were included with the car. Looking under the front end of my car it looks like it has the attachment points for a sway bar, and that somebody removed it for some reason in the past.

What is the difference between HD suspension and extra HD suspension? Is the only difference larger diameter torsion bars and more leaves in the rear springs?

I have to go back and look at my photographs from this past summer to see what diameter my current torsion bars are. I will also count the number of leaves in my rear springs. I don’t think I have the hemi torsion bars or rear springs.. I am assuming hemi = extra HD.

Are your 15” steel wheels 7” wide and reproduction?

My little 14x6 wheels with 245/60/14 tires prevent me from turning full lock to lock with my Borgeson steering box. The rear sidewall of the tire makes contact with the inner frame rails on my car preventing the box from turning the wheels any further.

I don’t understand how you guys can be putting these massive wheels and tires on the front of the car without severely restricting the turning radius (that includes you Kern Dog). Are you guys modifying/replacing the front end components in some manner to prevent this from happening?

Body colored 15x7 steelies with dog dishes look great.

I had them on my 71 Challenger. But never owned a 71 with Rallye wheels and dark gray center caps like I have now, but they are 14x6 and two of them have damage. I like the Rallye/dark gray combination. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find a set of four 15x7 Rallye wheels available to buy, vintage or reproduction..

My Bee

15 X 8 Rear 275/60 15
15 X 7 Front 245/60 15

Only thing I don’t like is no one makes a decent 15 X 8 Trim Ring for the rear that fills the gap correctly

The wheel well openings are huge!

Yep, the front fenders are massive on these cars. BUT the wheel clearance for turning without hitting the frame rails is NOT huge. A 245 width tire on stock 14x6 hits the frame rail. I had the same problem on a 71 Challenger (245/60/15 on 15x7), which has much smaller fenders.
