Harmon Friend was a young man into drag racing, and was drag racing a '62 fuel injected 'vette. In 1964, he learned about the 426 hemi, and decided he had to have one. He contacted his local dodge dealer and enquired about getting one of those altered wheelbase A990's, but he wasn't high enough on the pecking order to get one, and the dealer wasn't even sure he could get Harmon a standard A990, as they were a limited production, hand built race car at the Lynch assembly plant. Harmon (Harm) didn;t care what color it was, as he was planning on repainting it anyways, to an emerald green, like his vette's. His dealer pulled through, and the light blue '65 A990 was delivered. Harm immediately took it to the strip, and he noted something was peculiar, that he was hitting the traps just after getting into high gear. Upon further inspection, it was determined that although all A990's were equipped with 4.56's, his wasn't, and had 3.23's or something like that. For whatever reason, when the car was built, they had installed the wrong rear end. He took it back to the dealer, and had the gears swapped in 2-3 days. Initially he named the car " Man from Mopar". Later, he changed the name of the car to " N Harm's Way ", like the name from the WWII movie. He campaigned the car in NE ohio, winning often, and was the local hero, having the fastest car in town. He competed in the national's in Columbus, red lighting in the 6th round, very rare for him. At one point, he matched raced "Akron" Arlen Vanke, who was racing his max wedge, but Harm's hemi won, to the chagrin of Arlen. Well, Harm found his love in the late '60's, and got married. As they discussed starting a family, they bargained that once Harm set a national record, he would sell the car, and quit racing. Harm set an AHRA record with the car in 1969, and soon after sold the car, with 86 original miles. Harm never raced again. The car went to Buffalo, then Texas, then indiana, and had an extensive restoration. It was put up for sale, auction, and that's when I got ahold of it, now with 120 miles, bringing it back to the Cleveland area. I contacted Harm, and it's been great !!! The car retains it's original engine block, heads, intake. Super cool guy and car. I'm very lucky to be taking care of Harm's car !!!
