My friend has a 9 year old son that is a huge Richard Petty fan. My friend had a framed Richard Petty postage stamp. His son wrote Richard a letter and sent him the framed stamp and got it back signed by the king himself. I thought this was a cool story.

If your friend is ever in North Carolina, Richard Petty has his shop and museum in Randleman. Great day for any race fan or car enthusiast.

I'm not a celebrity fan but Mr Petty, Mr. Sox, Mr. Landy and Mr. McCandless all were/are pretty cool guys it seems.

The King - from back when a racer was more than just a hired driver. They were racers before they were ever celebrities, and they didn't forget where they came from. I've never heard of Richard being anything but a class act. Thanks for sharing your friend's son's story.

Maybe gracious to fan but he would not every supply race tickets to family member or discount driving experience fees. Still a great man and we all understood his reasoning. We have been invited to the shop though and will hopefully be able to do it some day.

Let me know when you are coming, it's 30 minutes from me and I will buy you lunch.

I still need to look onto some lift information also. We will have to see how this year goes it has become apparent I need to get out of this winter artic air.

We're in the 50's everyday here, not tropics by any means, but not Mid-West either.

I won a chance to meet him at a local track probably 10 years ago. They brought in a RV and they would bring you in to meet him. There was probably 20 of us there hanging out waiting for him to arrive. I saw him coming a ways away and watched as he was making his way towards us there was a boy probably 4-6 playing with a car on the grass. When he got closer he stopped and asked the little boy about his car and if he was having fun. Spent 5-10 minutes with him then continued his walk to us. I just thought that said a lot about the man he is. I got on the internet and found a picture of him, and one of him driving the 70 Superbird and he signed them for me. I later went to his museum which I would recommend to do. You never know how much longer things like this will be around.

Right now the 50's would be like walking it to a furnace room. 9 degrees at present. We have a niece in Florida and we were planning on being there now if the transmission in the truck had not gone out.

My stepfather, passed away in 2000, told me he used to run shine w Petty "back in the day" I was like, "ya, whatever". So yrs later, I'm stationed in VA n my stepfather is having a shrimp boil at his house on the James River on the NC side. I'm drinking beer n I hear this lopey truck coming down the drive. Skinny guy w a black hat gets out, goes to the back of the truck n gets a case of shine out. Walks up the drive, it's Richard Petty. Never doubted my stepfather again. Petty was a great, laid back guy. N the shine was killer.

What great stories here!

I've never had the pleasure of meeting him but got to do some parts for a few cars in the museum, and for his nephew Timmy who has the original Petty's Garage now called the Moonshine Speed Shop.

The blue and black Moroso valve covers in the lower right corner now live on Terry LaBonte's old Piedmont race car at the museum.

I ended up with some cool memorabilia too - used pistons, valve covers, etc., all signed, and most double signed by his mechanic brother Maurice "The Chief" too. It was a sad day losing Maurice a few months back.

Legends touch us all in one way or another ... and are never forgotten.

That's a great story and happy ending for your friend's son @Scott Engelhardt

I tried about 10 years ago to get in touch with Bill 'Maverick' Golden to get an autographed picture of his A100 wheelstander. I never got a reply from his MySpace.com page, then I discovered recently that he had been a member of FABO. Sadly now he has passed on, the opportunity has vanished. It was also about seeking his approval to do what I wanted to do...so I amended my signage accordingly to avoid conflict.
