Hi. This is the first time I’ve rebuilt a rear end. I’ve looked online and some charts say this is ok yet others say it’s bad. Could someone give me advice on it please? It’s a Ford 8.8 for my son. Thank you. Mike.

The pinion is too far outboard. The pattern should be centered and the Backlash or freeplay should be
around 0.0065.Look it up for your specific axle. Are you using anything to measure the pinion
depth before you put it together?

Pinion not deep enough, take some shims out...do a big jump, like .020" and see where that gets ya...from there it should be small adjustments

Sorry, I reversed what was needed! I keep forgetting the pattern is reversed because of the arc in the
ring and the pinion. The chart should help. Try and have a helper try to grab an axel and try and slow
your rotation so the pinion is under a small load. This helps with the pattern.

I used the stock pinion shim. I thought that was supposed to be the one used. So I need to add to it correct? I would also need to change the carrier shims too. Does that sound right? Sorry for the dumb questions. Mike

I also have nothing to measure the depth. It’s basically a seek and destroy mission. I’m going on my third crush sleeve

Honestly. I don’t know. That’s what the kit came with to set the preload on the pinion bearings. I’m not familiar enough with these for a solid sleeve.

Subtract.... like I said earlier I would start by removing .020" and see where that puts the pattern. Pinion depth tool is cool but not necessary.

Thanks. I’ll give it a shot. The shim in there is very thin. Can I just remove it and not use one?

What center section casting are you working with? Post a picture of the gear end of the pinion shaft.

It’s a Ford 8.8. 1986 mustang gt. Here’s a picture for you. Thanks!

I'm not sure I'd move pinion shim. The pattern toe to heel really isn't much concern. What is important is that it isn't to deep into the root. And conversely that it doesn't runoff the top of the tooth. What does the coast look like? Read here good info. I tried to make it as large as possible. Sorry for the blurriness.
Doug

Yeah. I think I used too much paste. I’ll clean it up and check the coast side. Thank you for the charts! Mike
