74 R. Runner rear end trivia question

hamtramckhisorical

was a track pack option even available with a 318?

Not by that name but you could get 3:55 gears behind a 318 in a 74 RR. (I have no idea WHY anyone would do that but you could order it)

You can get 400 hp out of a 318 and with those gears it can be a BB killer.

74 was last year for Trac Pac. You could still get sure grip in 75 but no 355 gears

The term Trac PAC refers to the 3:54 Dana Four speed set up behind a 440 or Hemi.

Again do you mean the A36 3:55 gear package that WAS available behind a 74 318?

The 8 3/4" axle was still in E body cars and the trucks through the 1974 model year.
ALL 73- late B bodies built in America had that ISO-clamp sound reduction rubber junk in the rear. I have never seen an 8 3/4" axle with that design.
Mine has it

My 74 Coronet 400 4bbl has an 8.25 rear.

Yes, I have known some 400s getting 8.25 too, but being generic, usually 73/74 BB still got 8.75 and even 340/360 got them. Then some 440s could get 9.25. Maybe some 400 4speeds too. So this kind of configuration were not too diff from earlier years, but diff gears options.

Station wagons used to be even more reinforced on axle setup

I've seen 8.25 behind 2 barrel 400 cars.

Just for additional reference, My 73 Road Runner has a 8.75 3.55 sure grip axle. It is a 340, auto, slap stik car.

I have found after owning around 50-60 71-74 B bodies that most came with a 8.25 rear. HP cars and cars optioned with either A35 or A36 got an 8.75.
I would have thought that my 74 Coronet with a 400 4 bbl even though non-hp would have got a 9.25 but it didn't.

They didn't all get sway bars. Ya got 6 leaves
My 74 Rallye Charger 360 phtos.

That is a surprise! I'd like to see a clearer picture of just the housing. The center hole in the spring pad is a LOT larger in an ISO car. It is one way to immediately identify a 1973 and later axle.

Since you wish it, I'll become reality LOL.

Dunno if you are member of this FB group, but will post pic also, just in case. Here you can see the axle spring pad detail.

Thank you.
No, I am not a member of any facebook page. I vehemently refuse to be associated with that site or the criminal that runs it.

My 73 RR GTX came with a 8 3/4 sure grip 3.55
I swapped for a DANA 60 with 4.10 Sure Grip from a E- Body

Ok, at the risk of burning out this subject, I must update you. Years ago I buy a 74 R. Runner from a friend who bought it new. I was told it had a 355 posi. I always assumed 8 1/4. It's got a 9 1/4. He died in a trucking accident a year ago. I'm gonna restore the car
