People always asking to buy my car.

I used to say the pat answer of "car is part of the family, not for sale at any price"....
But given recent events here at FBBO, I'd have to modify that answer to somehow
include "there'd be 100 guys after me with pitchforks and torches if I sold Fred!" :)

I don't have may offers to purchase my '72 SSP. If I do/did, I just say (honestly) going to my grandson(s) and that should be sure to quell the interest right then and there. I don't think that many people who ask are really serious about making a deal with us.

I don't buy or build for resale, I build for me & what I like
I don't really care what other like or have to say...
albeit;
I do keep up with values & watch a lot of car stuff
& auctions too

the locals here all like my car,
even the LEO's give me the thumbs up, all the kids dig it
we have a lot of them/both, live here where I do

Lately
I don't have too many 'is it for sale ?' inquiries
more 'how much does it cost to build a car ?'
or 'cost to restore a car like that ?'

mine are rarely OE type restorations anymore
I'm far more of a day 2 type guy, racecar or street/strip
pretty much always have been

I'm usually polite, especially with the younger or older crowds
younger guys (like teens) just really are curious usually
seems like there is less & less of them interested in older cars
old guys seems like they are reliving their youth, want to talk etc.
some have some great stories, some don't

In my experience around here anyway,
the people in their 30's are usually the type
that get all pushed out of shape when they find out it's not cheap
or inexpensive to buy or build these cars
they think it's just an old used car
I'm usually polite until I don't need to be polite anymore

my car has gone thru changes,
my build (68 RR) has changed a couple times,
I've put parts on & taken them off, as my taste changes
the color has changed too,
I drove it for 12 years with Ultra Flat Black (hot rod style black) paint
while I didn't want to spend the $$ to paint it, just yet

it was Buddies car & I was just the chauffer

I actually got far more inquiries about value when it was Ultra Flat Black
then after it was painted the LL1 Surf Turquoise Poly Metallic
albeit it's far from a show paint job, it's a 20ft-er garage paint job
I like having the Org. color on it again,
with my personal style & take on a 60's/70's, with modern stuff vibe

Now, I usually fill my fuel jugs up,
when I go down to fill the gernerator jugs
& I just fuel the car at home, in the driveway/garage
I mostly just drive it locally, not many big trips of late
(since my dad had his heart episodes etc., I stay pretty close to home)
I haven't been in a gas station for a couple of years with the car
that's usually where 'most the inquiry' about the car was
Or the local Safeway grocery store parking lot, was another place
I'd usually park out away from everyone in-front of another store
that wasn't that busy/crowded & walk to the store, I need to shop at...

I'm surprised how many people like my ol' beater
I think it's a 5 on the scale of 1-10, in appearance
it looks like a hotrod, sounds like a hotrod
& runs like a scalded ape, it's no showpiece at all, by any stretch
a driver, drag-car in search of a corner
but I like it
I'm not sure I could get my $$$ back out of it
done so many things twice now, it's a labor of love
or hate sometimes now :poke:
(hell I sold the stroker short block out of it twice, I have the OE block
in it now with all my bolt-ons, heads, roller cam, rockers & 6bbl etc
.)

I don't attend shows usually, I'm really not into sitting & BS-ing
I like races & events where you do something with the car
not just sit
When at the track (not many open here right now)
some people actually come up & start a conversation
some give a compliment, some critique' it too

as long as they aren't being an NE/NYer-style asshole,
That nagging persisting with a line of questions or critiques
I don't care for...

I'm ok with answering questions even about value, costs etc.
Once in a blue moon I go to a local car & coffee
a town over Jamestown @ some burger joint
where a bunch of nice cars/owners hang out & bench race
every so often someone at one of them, will ask about price or cost
I think it's more of a conversation starter more than wanting to buy...

not much car stuff going on for about a year now...

to summ it up, I don't like being bugged,
by the obvious ******** or the fender tag/vin Knowitalls types
but don't mind some conversation either...

it's good to have people be interested
must have done something right

sorry for the short book

I've bought only 2 or 3 cars to flip but they were 500 dollar beaters. The cars that I wasn't planning on selling got sold when someone offered stoooopid money for them and were project cars.

I have had people try to buy some of my cars in the past. I did the usual "not for sale" or throw out a huge number and, watch them walk away. The last couple years it has been asked "what is something like that worth?" I tell them its worth as much as I can get!!!

Say what Ed?
Fran Blacker said:
"Been awhile since anyone asked to buy my car. Guy in 1988 offered $25k. Even RC ask if my car was for sale, never talked money cause not for sale.
Time is getting close though."
THAT
what...

The last time a guy wanted to 'buy' my car which I made clear was NOT for sale he threw out a number and when I declined he said he would throw in his wife who appeared to be with him at the time.
I thought he was joking.
He was not...

That was weird.

Wow. Awkward....

Wow. Awkward....
Yes, very awkward indeed. I was rather rude before getting away from there as fast as I could.
I am really liking Budnick's idea of filling jugs & taking fuel home after that one. It'd probably be more practical if I hauled around my own fuel trailer though.

Oh, don't get me wrong here my friend.
The OP asked a specific question in this thread, which I answered...
but in general, I have actually gotten comfortable with being approached in parking lots,
gas stations, etc. when we have Fred out and about.
I'll typically spend the time with whoever approaches, as long as I sense their genuine intent.

These cars pull up all sorts of memories for some folks and innocent fascination in others and
I can fully understand that, so I'll do my best to be a good steward of the car - sometimes, with
the wife glaring at me that we're needing to get on with whatever tasks are at hand.
If it makes someone's day - or even if it just makes them smile for a couple minutes - it's
worth my time, every time.

It's easier to do that in a small town, sure - and in a lower crime area for sure, acknowledged -
but I see it as part of the responsibility of being the caretaker of the car, at least until the Big Guy
does the final fitting of my pine box tuxedo.

I occasionally go to a Thursday PM car meet at a local fast food restaurant. Got off work early (actually on time-which is considered early, but I digress) and since I drove the Road Runner to work I decided to swing by and see if there was a crowd. Nice car meet with about 20 cars at the peak as most were coming and going all the time.

Older gentlemen approached me and asked if the Road Runner was my car. When I replied yes he took out his phone and showed me pictures of my Road Runner taken over the past year. Sort of freaky, but not like a stalker. He said whenever I see your car I wait around to talk to you, but I never seem to connect. I've been wanting to talk to you for over a year.

He is a 'snowbird' with his main residence in Michigan. Life long MOPAR guy that mostly owned Plymouths. He begins to tell me a long sad story of his 1970 Road Runner that basically has been in paint jail for almost 10 years! It seems this shop does maybe a few hours of work on the car once, or twice a year. He then said; "I'm not sure I will live to see it finished".

I told him I felt bad for his experience and said I really don't have any advice. Then he said; "Well you can sell me yours!" I laughed and said it was not for sale, but flattered that I had such a big fan of my car. I joked that he could be the president of my Road Runner fan club.

A few more hints about selling, and I said the price would be 'far from reasonable if I sold'. Glad the conversation ended there.

My friend that has a 70 Super Bee always replies to "is it for sale" questions with; "Let me give you my I don't want to sell price of 75 thousand dollars!" That ends the conversation QUICKLY.

It's not for sale, but I'd trade it for Kate Upton or Jennifer Aniston......

My mom's daily driver toward the end was either her 55 Belair hdtp, or her 63 impala. People always asked her if she wanted to sell, thinking the old lady doesn't know what she has.
She always said " Sure, but i know what it is worth. Offer me twice that and we'll talk".
Nobody ever did.

Like many here I've had offers to buy the charger; the encounters varied from pleasant, to odd, but the most memorable offer i can remember is back in 2004 when I was at the weekly Cruisin Grand car show, a pretty big deal in San Diego for car people.

I was by the Charger and a guy pulled up behind me and parked in a 4th generation Mustang GT convertible in mineral grey. Might not sound like much to most people but I personally love that era of muscle cars, whether they were from Ford, Pontiac, whatever. Looking at this Mustang, this is exactly how i would have ordered the car if I had had the money back then: mineral grey, premium GT package, 5 speed manual! Guy with his kids gets out and immediately walks over to the Charger and eyeballs the car. We talk for a little while, but I eventually walk off with my friends because I wanted to enjoy the rest of the cruise night.

I got back to the Charger towards the end of the show and the Mustang GT owner is by my car. We talk some more and suddenly he rolls out an offer that I never expected: he wants to trade his new Mustang GT convertible for my Charger, straight up. Apparently he had paid cash for his car so he already had the pink slip. He knows how much I love his car and according to him it only makes sense to make the trade. Thinking about the values back then I would've gained and he would've lost, as his car was worth a little more than my Charger. I immediately shut the offer down but I have to say, although I'm ashamed of it, part of me fantasized about making the trade for what was, in my opinion, a Mustang GT that pushed all of my buttons.

It's 2021 and I am sure as hell glad that I never made that trade, and i wouldn't even consider it today. Like you guys I've had some offers, some of them stupid, others more reasonable, but I love this car and I'm sticking with her...

I fully expect to get stupid-low offers once I get this dude on the road.

I am going to drive it and maybe play along with the solicitors.
$3500? Yeah, sounds like a fair deal to me, Sir.
