I have a 1970 440. The oil sending unit will not line up to be installed. There are two holes on the rear of the block. The unit usually goes in the hole that is on the drivers side. There are ridges on the block that will keep the oil sending from lining up to be installed. I am using the oil sending for the gauge. What is the problem. The oil sending unit is too long. What is the solution?

Sounds like the sending unit isn’t correct. The correct one will clear the rib just fine also make sure you are lining it up correctly so it will start.

My 440 is a '70 as well. The dash gauge oil pressure sending unit has fit in it forever. My mechanical gauge line is in the other port.
Make sure you have the correct sending unit.......

you must have the wrong one I did the same as above on my 70-440

I had the same problem with a new sending unit. the diameter is larger than the originals. Just file or grind the ridge enough so it will thread in. Recently Nick on u tube had a challenge question for a hemi motor he built and he had a camera scan the motor and as it passed the sending unit you could see where the ridge had been filed.

Screw all that. This old sprinkler guy took the easy way out (and made it easy to swap the
sender out in the future:
