Afternoon Folks. Perhaps you can help me. At the end of my high school days, one of my best friends bought a new Charger. I think it was a 72, but here are some of the things the car came with.

The night he got it, it was cold, I remember. It had Stock wheels/tires with dog dish hubs. He stopped by and he said, "I have new wheels/tires for the car, lets go burn these off". I was in. My buddy did a lot of work to that Charger to make it even faster in the Quarter. Unfortunately, we lost him to Colon Cancer at an early age. Note to self, keep getting checked. Anyway, I think it had some unusual features, that I remember. So, perhaps you all can help me know what year it was exactly. This is what I remember.

It came with a 440, 4 barrel, 4 Spd, Suregrip. It had a bench seat. No Aircon. I know it would run 140mph (probably a rear in the 2's?). Was with him when we did it. I know it had an Air Grabber on the hood. I do not think it had hide away head lights. It was Blue with white interior. It sounded GREAT!! He went to "Mechanics" school in Denver where he "Built" the engine. Unfortunately he spun a main one night in a Drag just after his return from school. So, do you have enough to go on to make a determination of Year and perhaps Model?? He was a GREAT guy. Unfortunately, I have no photos, just memories. Best, Brian

440 4-speed was available in 71-72. Auto only with 440 in 73-74.

Now we are narrowing it down to a 72, me thinks. Interesting that it was 440, Grabber hood, BENCH seat, no Aircon? or was that part of the deal?

Don’t recall the air grabber being available in 72? Also with and A/G a/c was not an option.

If it has the large square recessed side markers like on my car, it's a 1971.
I think '72 and later had more of single bar style on the outside of the fenders

N96 hood ( airgrabber ) was even an option with 340s on 72.

A/C was not equipped with Air grabber because compressor didn't fit.

No A/C on 440s 4 speed either to keep safe the compressor from torque at high RPMs while shifting as far I know.

Yeap, 72 and lates got the regular and universally installed surface sidemarkers, while 71s got the recessed and splitted sidemarkers.

Bench and 4 speed is not a common combo.

If 72 and Airgrabber, was definitelly a Rallye, so doors should get the 5 horizontal louvers. On 71 the N96 hood could be either on R/T or Bees, so could be a plain door

71 440 was available in R/T and SE.

72 Rallye or SE.

SE unlikely to come with dog dish caps.

SE unlikely to come with 4 speed.

29 71 440 4-speed SE's
21 72 440 4-speed SE's

29 71 440 4-speed SE's
21 72 440 4-speed SE's

Almost the definition of "unlikely".

Not sure if the 440-4 was available in the Super Bee in 71.

if it got Air Grabber is not an SE.

You couldn't get a Bee with 440 ( neither auto or manual ) except being 6pack. 440 4bbls was exclusive for R/Ts as Standard equipment and Optional on SEs

If it was a 72 with N96 hood just can be a Rallye.

I am showing 26 440-4bbls Super Bees built in 71. All autos. I am sure they were all late production. I agree OP's car is a Rallye based on the information given.

I really appreciate you guys. It makes me very nastalgic to think about being in that car at the end of high school, start of college. I really miss my buddy. I wish I knew more and could come across his old car. It was a RUNNER and he was a very good friend when I needed a very good friend. Best to all, Brian

Ya GG shows 26 440-4 and 99 440-6 Supers made in 71.
Guess maybe I have one of the 26 hoods made

What color was it? That could narrow it down.

Hmmmm. My buddy's had the vacuum switch inside the car for the Air Grabber. The Fresh Air door (air grabber) came up on the hood when the switch was to "Open". That was a GREAT thing to see as he rolled up to the line. :) The Air Grabber had something on the side that could be read when the AG was open. Dont remember what it said?? Best, B.

Well that doesnt help. I was hoping a high impact color would have narrowed it down to a 71
