Been an interesting week of freeze no power and water

I hope for the best for all of you in Texas!! Be safe!!

I spent my time, helping the neighbors prepare for the cold, making sure pipes were covered and obvious issues were addressed. This was a 100 year event. I see some folks talking about prep and deregulation ect.....none of that matters when your pipes are too shallow and not rated to -23 degree wind chill. Lets be honest and realize that codes need to be updated here, and should have 30 years ago. Cranky, myself and lots of other members got the full dose of this weather and as grown men, we made due. The government can do a lot during the regular times of year, but when things get nasty.....you need to step up and get to it.

Up here in Illinois we bury our water lines at least 42" down so they don't freeze, but they
still break sometimes in the winter from expansion/contraction. All of our pipes are in the middle of the house
so they don't freeze. R25 in the walls and R40 in the ceiling. We've always got those creeps knocking
on our doors trying to save us money on our electric bills by signing with them. No Way Jose!
Don't want to get caught in that trap. My thoughts are with everyone affected.

I'm glad you Texans made it OK.

It got Alaska cold here in Oklahoma, too. First time in 30 years the unheated attached garage got below 50 F (it was 29 F one morning). A Robin froze to death on my Mom's back porch. I made it through without losing power, thank God. I left the water trickling steadily on the faucet farthest from the water inlet to the house. I left the cabinet doors open under all the sinks. The natural gas bill is going to be a lot higher in March and April.

My sister, the 4.0 student in high school, had issues with her hot water tank pipes in her garage freezing. I told her to get a drop light and a 75 watt bulb and place it next to the frozen pipe to keep it above freezing. It's an old trick I used in my first house that had a hot water tank in the garage. She called me later to come over and help. When I got there she had a 75 watt LED bulb in the drop light. She learned the difference between incandescent and LED lights that day.

I got a whole house generator installed 3 years ago for this reason. I had smaller generator before with a manual transfer switch but this one comes on a few seconds after power loss and runs the whole house. I'm on a well so no power means no water.

Smart guy.

And to think years ago growing I had watched dad hook the welder to water pipes on the farm to thaw them out. Setting here thinking about it wondering how the pump in the well house survived the load. Plastic was unheard of then and everything was metal.

Only way we loss water here is failure to pay the bill or a case this fall we someone broke a main line while digging without proper clearances. Water comes from the districts gravity feed tower. Frozen water line under the house are my problem.

Glad to hear that you came through OK Cranky, after you posted that your generator took a crap, I got a little concerned. I’m glad all the others that posted are doing OK. We just had a mini blizzard here on Monday. Spent Tuesday digging out. Our son and his family in Kentucky lost power for a couple of days due to the ice down there. Supposed to warm up a little this week. Man, I can’t wait to get the Belvedere out, but that won’t be for awhile yet.

I have 4 outside water faucets...2 that were already on the house and 2 more that I installed when I built the shop....one in front by the driveway and one out behind the shop at the carport and I did the same thing....left the back faucet running slowly. Can't believe it didn't leave a big icicle hanging off of it. And yeah on the LED light bulbs. They just don't produce any heat.

I guess the other thread just went bye bye

Poof !

Sorry, just learned a vital lesson.

Well I’m not sure what thread went poof but the problems is not the fault of the members. The owners of these sights that are meant to promote cars and help to others, have let non car related subjects on the board that are volatile to say the least. I think it’s great to have people all over the country concerned enough about their car friends in a completely different state to ask “ how you guys doing?” What they don’t understand (or care) is that the discord started on these other forums just bleeds over onto the other forums and these same people that hate each other on those forum, jab each other everywhere else. It’s kind of like like letting your dog watch your sandwich and then being surprised when it’s gone when you cone back!

I guess I'll be back when I have a problem with my car

Here in the Mitten, we are used to this kind of trouble. When the power goes out, which it often does, my neighborhood is a symphony of generators, conducted by my neighbor Big Al. Al must be from Texas, because everything is bigger in his yard. Anyway, I’m glad to hear our Texans here made it through with minimal damage, and my hope is that it never happens again.
