What years did the Charger SE have the “SE” w/wreath hood ornament available?

My 72 SE did not come with one. I picked up a nice 72 hood replacement for it the other day and it has one on it. Just wondering if It was original or if someone added it

According to my 72 Charger Illustrated Facts and Features manual, I saw no evidence that 72 SE's had a hood ornament. They are supposed to have a Dodge nameplate on the front of the hood, drivers side. Most original, unrestored SE's I've seen have this nameplate. Many restored ones I see don't have it.

I may be wrong but I think the hood emblem was 73 and 74 SE only with the extra moldings and only on the flat hood. I have never been a fan of the extra trim or the ornament on the Charger.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, mine came with all the SE nameplates and I still have them wrapped up waiting for “the day”. I was pretty sure that 1973 was the first year of these ornaments on the SE Charger. I did some searching and have found two photos of 72 SE’s with this ornament on with the 72 hoods with one of these stated as original (with rust and all). I have also found a couple 73 SE’s w the 72 hood with this emblem.

I’m now wondering if a couple late production 72’s got this ornament, and some early 73’s got the 72 hood leftovers w/ornament.

Could be. They did change things up during the production year, use up parts bins, etc. My manual says 72 Chargers have the passenger side front fender lower petastar. But, most 72's never had this.

The 3rd gen hoods get swapped out so much it’s hard to know if a 72 hood w/ornament was original to that car. 73-74 is my story and I am sticking to it.

What do the louvers look like on the hood you bought? I have never seen a 72 with the hood emblem.

If you mean the vents lines on the cowl side of the hood, they are the 72 (and some 71) style for standard hoods. I’ll try and get a pic up later

My 72 SE didn't have the ornament, the 73 did.
Both had the pentastar.

Okay, here’s a photo of the 72 Hood with the SE ornament that I picked up.

Interesting on the 72 hoods, adding the emblem could have been a late model year change. I am aware of the vent changes.

Really nice pictures for some comparison. My Charger is a 74 and I have worked on smoothing out the exterior and earlier bumper and the hood as well. Most people assume it is a 72 until they look at the quarter glasses. This car is just lots of fun and really gets lots of thumbs up.  :steering:

Not sure if you can see the center bumper emblem but my wife laid fresh vinyl wrap into the red white ad blue....

The hood emblem may have replaced the one in the center of the bumper..... shame on them..

Hood emblem is SE only. Bumper emblem is all Chargers 71-72.

Just checked my 72 parts book, no hood emblem listed. Nov 72 issue. must have had a few sneak out or like you mentioned a few early 73's got the 72 style hood to use them up.

I bought a new Charger SE in 1976. It had the SE ornament with the Wreath. I remember replacing it a few times because the thieves thought it was neat. It was on a spring loaded cable so it could pivot if hit but even with the inside hood latch was no match for someone who wanted it. I gave up after buying 3 or 4 of them.

I just like the emblem in the center of the bumper myself.
