Hello,
After purchasing this 70 Road Runner, I looked closer at the 4 speed hump and thought for sure this couldn’t be factory. Some hack job did this and a poor one at that. I showed the pictures to a reputable builder and he felt that it is factory done.

The fender tag is for a 4 speed car but I want to get other’s opinions on this one.
Any chance it came from the factory this way??

Thanks,
Thomas

looks to me like someone got rid of a 4 speed hump, I guess to go automatic, then later put a 4 speed hump back in it

Agree with the above. Looks like there is an extra strip of metal welded in around the perimeter of the hump.

and areas where old welds were cut "around" ....... originals were not spot welded in, they had little "blobs" of weld around the perimeter (larger than tack welds)

I was thinking the same thing. It looks like it was crudely cut it out of either my car or another.

I’m just really trying to find out if my car was an original 4 speed car. I bought this car as a roller with lots of parts and it was painted. Anything else I can look for that would be proof either way?

The rad support number doesn’t match the last 4 of the VIN, but it looks like the numbers match on the truck channel. Hard to say 100% because it is painted.

The hump is real. You can see someone cut out the hump out about an inch around
the stamped hump. That is part of the floor pan you see. You can see that the underside have been not done well. Hump was installed but this is not original.
Unless someone took the original hump out and later in life someone reinstalled.

so you’re saying the floor pan itself looks like it was for a 4speed? It looks like everything else is extremely solid and original sheet metal.

Too much butchery done there to tell what it was originally. Sorry.

Floorplans were the same auto or manual. What does the frame mount for the z-bar look like?

Would fender tag say auto or 4 speed, if the tag is there?

why? is there evidence of it being changed?

no evidence so far. But just getting other’s thoughts. The stamped numbers on the core support did not match the last 6 of the VIN and I took a closer look at the hump. Which is why I posted this. Everything else seems to be ok.

If you want a four speed what difference does it really make?

In the grand scheme it doesn’t but when you are told something, nothing wrong with verification. Especially if I ever sale the car. Wouldn’t won’t to mislead anyone either..

D21 is 4-speed on the tag, and yes that bracket is held on by sloppy factory welds. Someone just cut the hump out for some reason in the past and then came to their senses and put it back in. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
