Is this 4 speed hump factory???

D21 is 4-speed on the tag, and yes that bracket is held on by sloppy factory welds. Someone just cut the hump out for some reason in the past and then came to their senses and put it back in. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

that helps a lot! Thanks to all who responded

Not sure about your your car, but on 67s the numbers on the rad support match the last numbers on the fender tag.

Yes, that’s what I was saying. The 6 digits on my core support dont match the last 6 of the VIN/Fender tag. It was probably wrecked and replaced at some point with another factory support.

you should be able to find evidence of that........ either disturbed spot welds, hidden butt welds, or even some "right in your face" type of hack

well that’s a good sign Assuming that all cars didn’t have the bracket there lol.
Only stick shift cars were supposed to get that bracket....and have never seen an automatic car with one unless someone swapped out the stick shift setup.

Now that bracket looks factory on the welding to me.
Obviously only opinion but I don’t feel the same way. Factory ones I had didn’t have welding on both sides. Welding quality was also (marginally) better.

Floor hump was obviously cut from something else and they didn’t even cut the old piece of floor off! It’s there now so it doesn’t really matter but I see no way this is a factory 4-speed.

If the person that welded in the trans hump, also changed the rad support, or front clip or whatever, it will be obvious.

Really need to confirm the trunk rail numbers. Sounds like a re-body at the moment.

ones I have seen have been fairly sloppy........ I would think it depends on who was doing the welding, lots of variables there

I would also like to see the numbers more clearly on the rear trunk channel but it’s been covered pretty good with paint. I can make out some of the numbers, which fall into place for the VIN/fender tag numbers. Not sure how I could see more clearly without sanding off the paint

They should be under the gasket right? Would seem that a selective scrape could be easily covered. If it were me it would be eating me not knowing. Rad support not matching isn’t a hopeful sign. How do the welds up there look?

Under what gasket?
I will have to look closer at the welds when I get back to the car and see.

The trunk rail numbers are usually under the glued-down trunk gasket on the driver’s side.

Hello,
After purchasing this 70 Road Runner, I looked closer at the 4 speed hump and thought for sure this couldn’t be factory. Some hack job did this and a poor one at that. I showed the pictures to a reputable builder and he felt that it is factory done.

The fender tag is for a 4 speed car but I want to get other’s opinions on this one.
Any chance it came from the factory this way??

Thanks,
Thomas

The hump should have the same blue paint as the rest of the floorpan.

Also, the blackening of the welded areas underneath suggest this was done post-factory - which means it was added later on. That can only mean as @hunt2elk has said, it was a 4-speed car converted to an auto, and then back to a 4-speed car.

It is a 4-speed car from the factory, but it has suffered alterations over it's lifetime....like many others have.

Yes that’s the numbers on the trunk I was referring to, in the trunk channel on driver’s side. Those like like some of numbers fall into the right places for the last 6 of the VIN dash number and fender tag.

The VIN is not on the fender tag. The VIN is not on the core support. The SO number on the fender tag should match the numbers on the core support and won't be found on the VIN tag.

On a '70 car the last 6 digits are the same as found on the fender tag as they are on the VIM, and under the trunk lip, and the core support.

'69 cars are different.

A '70 car has BOTH VIN and SO numbers on the Fender tag
A '69 car only has the SO.

I was about to say... that was my understanding for 70’s cars too

Idk, but Nate might be on to something. Guess if it was my car, I would scrap the paint off the numbers on the trunk rail as well as the rad support to verify what matches the VIN and fender tag. After looking at your first pics, is the hump red and the rest of the car blue? If so, then the hump may have come from another car.
