As posted previously, I'm considering pulling the trigger on a 1971 Road Runner. I know "value" is wildly subjective, but I'm trying to figure out if the asking price is remotely reasonable. It's been a long time. Intent is to restore to a clean driver condition. Something to enjoy on nights and weekends and be a keeper, not a flip.

Vehicle in question is a rolling factory RM code B5 Blue, 340-4bbl, automatic, Road Runner, w/center console, bucket seats, A/C car, disc brakes, 26" radiator, half vinyl roof. No tranny. The car will come with what appears to be the original block, heads, intake, and crank. It will also come with another complete 340 taken out of a boat.

Rust on one front fender, no rust in trunk pan. Will need rust repair in the floor (passenger rear was only evidence) but rails and rockers all seem ok. Common areas for window rust seem ok too. Surprisingly no signs of rust under the vinyl. Both bumpers are present and in good shape. Glass is all there. Wiring/under dash in good shape and not a rat's nest.

Car is complete and there are no signs of being hacked on or modified, but interior will need redone, carpets, front seat covers etc...asking price is $6500. Obnoxious? In the right range? Good deal? Just looking for opinions to color my decision.

I'd be interested at $7,500 so yes good deal.
Its a 71
Its a roadrunner
Its a 340
Complete and in good condition
And a console car which I really like.

Just my opinion and here and that sounds like a decent deal. Have you looked at prices for just an empty shell or something similar?? Or one that is ALL in pieces and scattered all over the place.... :drinks::moparsmiley::moparsmiley::moparsmiley:

I've tried. Hard to find a '71 road runner listing at all unless you are looking for a fully restored car! Some of those prices make me spit coffee everywhere.

Exactly right and that’s just one reason why you should not have to think too much on this one. You want a RR correct? Here’s your chance and at a decent price. Just my opinion and that’s all.

You are right...guess I'm just being overly cautious and trying to keep emotion away from my wallet, but then again, if my wallet was the main consideration I wouldn't be considering this at all would I? LOL

Just my opinion and experience here but I would not have left that guys garage without making the deal and owning the car, but that’s just me. RR are hard to find.

So do this. Estimate on paper what it is going to cost you to finish this car the way you want it. Are you doing all the work or having it done? It makes a huge difference. Compare your cost estimate to a finished car.

You will find in most anstances buying a finished car is much less than having one restored. Take labor out of it by doing the work yourself and they usually can break even.

The price is very fair. But if your worried about the money, you may doing the wrong thing buying that car at any price.

I was tempted, and had the $$ in my pocket. Good thing is he's not advertising it. He opened the place up to give me first dibs before he lets them go to flippers and speculators. I owe him an answer by the end of the week.

That completely makes sense. I'm not worried about total outlay over a multi year project, since the goal is to have a keeper, not something to sell and make money or even break even on. Just making sure I'm getting "in" at a good price and leaving enough of my initial seed money to get things rolling.

If it has a clear title, I'd go and buy it.
Look real hard underneath first especially around the torsion bar cross member.
There's a lot of crap around and that one doesn't seem to be crap.

That's a good price for it.

Stick your hand/arm down in the cowl as far as you can and feel the metal, esp as much as you can around the vent stacks.

Closely inspect the door hinge area on the cowl.

Good cowl, good quarters, good rockers, good unibody, good around windshields.

Rear floor pan only (look real close).

I think 6500 is reasonable.

look as much "under" that vinyl top as you can as well.

Make THIS the LAST post you read on the debate.
Why?
Because reading posts is taking away DRIVE TIME! GO GET IT!

Sounds like a good deal to me:thumbsup:. I picked up a super nice almost 100% rust free 71 Sattelite a couple years ago for $3,500.. 400BB, busted transmission with a bit of a mess as far as wiring goes. Yours being a real RR I think your doing pretty good as yours will hold better value.

As mentioned look harder for the rust, doesn't take much for a small project to get really big and expensive.

This sounds like a very good deal to me. Even more so if you have a matching numbers 340. It also has a very nice color and super nice combo with the white canopy roof. If you don't want it, they will have others lined up to get it at that price. I am always looking online just to see and most project Mopars 71 and before are 10k in the condition you described.

Now that I am thinking about, where abouts in Oklahoma are you.? I'm not that far away. haha

Yep, if you don't grab it someone else will. I'd bet if they put that up on craigslist or facebook it would be gone in a flash. Good deal from what i've seen the past few months of looking. Especially if it's all there and not a rust bucket. If you're in the market for a 71 RR you not likely to find a better deal imho.
