I went in the loft today and dug out a gas tank filler tube for a second generation Charger, and I found the gas cap and ring that came with the car. The flip top gas cap has nice chrome for a 51 year old part,and the ring has nice chrome too,except for three pits in the ribbed area. They are California pieces so they are not badly pitted and worn like typical New England ones. The chrome looks good, but not like new, and because it am not painting the car now, the chrome won't look so new and flashy that it makes the rest of the car look bad. I am going to clean an paint the filler tube and repaint the black on the flip top gas cap.

I am glad I have the stash KD,because I found myself back up in the loft again,because when I moved the rubber gasket on the filler tube I found two rot holes in it! I also found an original lock ring for the sending unit. I like to reuse the original lock rings because I have had trouble with getting the reproduction lock rings to lock down tight enough to seal the sending unit tightly to the tank without it leaking fuel.

Well it is often said that the third time is the charm,well after the first gas tank filler tube was rotted under the rubber gasket, and the second one I dug out wasn't for a Charger, the third one has been scraped of a large chunk of factory undercoating, sanded down and etch primed, and given a fresh finish with matte silver paint, once dry, and a new vent tube is installed on it will be ready to go in the car.

I was sitting here,admiring my freshly painted gas tank filler tube and I had an epiphany! I noticed the outline of where the tube went into the rubber tank grommet, and realized that anything going inside the fuel tank shouldn't have paint on it. I had a vision of removing the fuel bowls from my brand new Sixpack carburetors and finding them full of flecks of silver paint and primer! I should have masked that area of the filler tube off before painting it, but atleast I caught my mistake before I put it in the car and filled it up with gasoline! So I wanted to pass this on to other people who are following the thread,so they don't make the same mistake that I did! I'm not getting any sharper with age!

So I got this other filler tube that I had, and grabbed it to paint thinking it was a Charger filler tube. I know that it is not for a Challenger, because I had 4 of those up there . Does anyone know what car its from? The tube is about 3 inches shorter than a Charger filler tube and doesn't have the curved end as seen in the picture sitting next to a Charger filler tube! What other cars had these types of filler tubes? I know Chargers and Challengers had them, and I know what they look like, so maybe a Dart or Duster,or maybe some other Mopar. Does anyone know what it fits?

I got the gas tank straps and J bolts cleaned up,etch primed,and painted a graphite grey to give them a raw metal appearance,and the won't rust!

I did some more cleaning in the garage today. I moved 7 hoods,a factory sunroof roof from a 73 Charger,a sunroof cartridge from a 73 Charger,and a 69 Charger R/T grille out of the shop area. I can almost walk around in the shop again! I took another pickup truck of wood,plastic,cardboard and chemicals like old spray cans from years ago out of there too! I had a good day out there!
 
I got the gas cap cleaned up and repainted the black on it,and I blacked out the ribbed area of the trim ring too. I cannot believe the condition of the chrome on the gas cap, it's 51 years old and in near perfect condition! That's the difference between a New England car,and a car from California!

I have to decide what I need to do next to keep things moving on this project. I saved up enough money to buy the flywheel,so I can order that next. Then I need to save up a grand to get the Accurate exhaust system. I already have the correct manifolds,and new stainless steel exhaust tips.
 
Today I started writing a punchlist of what I need to do,and what I left to buy for this car,and I have a lot left to buy,and a lot left to do! The weather will be braking soon,and I need to get going if I am serious about taking the car to Carlisle in four months!
 
After Carlisle ......my first objective would be get heat in that beautiful garage of yours
 
That is in the three year plan Steve. I would like to have heat in the building before I retire and I have three years left to work.
 
I tried to order the flywheel yesterday,and like most parts these days,it's on back order! Probably because of Covid 19? Today I was watching a Graveyard cars rerun, and the worms trivia question,was what option couldn''t you get on a 70 Charger? The possible answers were A)A factory sunroof. B)A convertible top,or C) a vynal top. His answer

I heard rare convertible 70 charger was only produced in state of rhode island?.... maybe one in massachusetts too:thumbsup:

As for the back orders. That is what I do all day, is order hundreds of race car parts all day for my job at work, and the entire country is on back order. It's not just a certain vendor. It is everyone. Everyone is weeks and even months behind. Or, worse yet, all of these non-automotive/racing mentality investment groups are buying out racing businesses and taking the true nature Mom and Pop for the customer mindset right out the window....
As for your vert. Guess it will wind up in MCG mag as a one of one someday...
 
Still no word on when the flywheel will be available? I went through the moldings I had for the two California 70 Charger R/Ts and between the two I managed to scrounge up a decent pair of non pitted vynal top check moldings,and stainless moldings to put on the car. Although the car was not a vynal top car,someone at some point added a green vynal top,to go with the green interior and side stripes. The fender tag shows a white painted roof on a white painted car,so it didn'y leave the factory with a vynal roof,but under the green top,was a fully painted white roof,with leaded seams on the rear pillars. So the car has the holes for the moldings,so I am going to put them on for now,until the day comes when I take the car back apart to do the body and paint,when that day comes,I have NOS rear quartet panels for the car with no holes drilled in them. These moldings look like they will clean up nice with some chrome polish,and look really good,like the gas cap,but not blingy new,so they will look good enough for a car not being painted for now.
