Edited by KiwiGTX - this thread started out as a WTB advertisement, but has grown into an offer to help out anyone in need of the two small rivets required to re-assemble the ashtray in various model cars.
As the rivets themselves are worth pennies, it seems crazy to have this in the For Sale section for now.

Anyone needing a pair (or a few more) of these rivets can contact the OP here by Private Conversation. Page two shows a short video clip of the actual installation.

Mopar experts,

I would like to remove the ashtray from the ashtray door so I can paint the door nicely. Is there anyplace to get rivets that look close to original??

Hmm... Thats a toughie.
Possibly a seller on E bay, who hoards oem parts. I'll see. Id imagine you could use any 3/16" rivet. But if like me, you want the REAL deal.

I think the marks on them were made by the setting tool.

The rivet is NOT a: "special Mopar only", "very specific", "you must use this", "NOS ashtray", "gotta have this to be correct" kind of rivet. It IS however, a simple 1/8 inch semitubular rivet that can be squeezed on by the correct tips like Halifaxhops suggested. Dadsbee...WOW!....you have an incredible stock of items!

Getting the correct rivets is only part of the equation, if you want it to look factory you need the proper setting tools, as HALIFAX and Steve817 pointed out. You'll need the correct driver and anvil to make the head and the clinch look correct, if you know a decent machinist they should be able to make a set for you so that you can hand set them. The pictures that HALIFAX posted are 2 types of drivers, the anvil is what clinches the rivet.

@steve817 do you by any chance know the dimensions of the rivets in question? I only ask because with the amazing resto work that you do I'm guessing that you've replaced some of these before.

That site is amazing!! I will buy the correct rivets and offer the extras to the site members

Thanks,

Jack
I have an ashtray I would like to take apart as well. If you buy the rivets, what are going to use to install them?

Drilled out the rivets today.

The rivets have oval heads, .218 dia. The rivet body is .125 (1/8) dia, The holes are .140 dia
The ash tray door and ash tray are each .035 thick, so .070 total thickness
Based on the rivet web site, the correct rivet needs to be ~ 0.075 longer than the grip range, so the rivets should be ~ 0.145 long
They sell 1/8 rivets that have .218 heads x 5/32 (.156) long

I think they can be set nicely with a pin punch; maybe not exact to original, but very close.

Let me know if anyone has anything; box of 100 is $15 plus shipping

Thanks everyone!!

Jack

A roll pin punch works great if that s what you mean by pin punch.

I used some extra window felt rivets, turned them down on the lathe to match factory size. I didn't put the divot in but you could do that after the fact with a center punch.

Painted my ashtray door & knob today. Rivets arrived too; THANKS Geetex!!

Hope to assemble tomorrow; will post results.

Geetex sent me enough rivets to share, so once I confirm the correct size, I will let you know and will send anyone who needs them; paying it forward.

Stay Tuned...
