Anyone here have a prostatectomy? If so what's been your personal experience post op? It looks like I'm looking at surgery in the next few months and was just looking for some insight.

My dad had radiation treatment which worked on his cancer, no surgery though. He was in his early 70's at the time, that was twenty years ago and still no trouble.

My father in law also had radiation treatments with good success. Less invasive but still not without risks. 440'

pros·trate
adjective
  1. lying stretched out on the ground with one's face downward.

pros·tate
noun
  1. a gland surrounding the neck of the bladder in male mammals and releasing prostatic fluid.

Signed,
Kern Dog.

Had a prostate biopsy 2 yrs ago. They take 10 chunks to test for cancer. Recovery was really easy. Can be a little disconcerting for you n your partner due to blood in your semen when you ejaculate for about 1-2 weeks after.

“a little disconcerting” lmfao
I honestly don’t remember my Dr telling me about this “after effect”.

Are they telling you the whole gland has to be removed?
Can't give you any advice if that's your condition.
6 years ago, i did the radiation seed implants, for prostate cancer.
Guess it worked well, as I'm still alive.
My last PSA test was 0.2, as i'm told it will never get down to a absolute zero score.
Anyway, good luck to you.
Having it removed, does open a whole can of worms, that others may chime in about, that i can't give you.

Get a 2nd opinion always, radiation treatment with cyberknife is 98% successful and very little side effects.

I had mine removed in 2010. 3 out of 12 biopsy samples showed cancer. Side effects, 1) like 50% of guys, didn't regain my ability to get an erection normally, 2) climax OK but of course no ejaculation no semen, 3) and as the surgeon said lost length. The pump required works great with the rubber rings. No further signs of cancer.

Lots of this going around on here.
Figures due to are average age.

Myself I am waiting for test results on a 4k blood test whatever the heck that is.
It's for prostate cancer screening.
I have a 5.9 PSA score, 3 years ago they did a MRI looking for tumors ect in my prostate and didn't find any.
62 and the fun is just starting.

My older brother had his completely removed. They used the robot with great success. He went home the same day, took one pain pill before bed and never took another. Said he was pissing like a 20 year old again. No other problems since.

The robot is so much better and more accurate. Removing it by hand can be troublesome. Too many nerves surround the prostate and the robot doesn't damage hardly any like doing it by hand. I've known a few that had it done without the robot.

I had a biopsy several years ago. My brother said it was worse than the operation by far. Dr. said he was only going to take a couple samples but kept taking more. Then he asked his assistant to get a couple more containers. Thought I was going to die after the tenth one. I told him that's enough. I was pissing blood for several days afterwards. They'll have a hard time getting me to go through that procedure again. SOB makes 10k on that procedure!

MoparManiac good luck with your procedure. Just study up on it and like mentioned, get a second opinion.

Thank God nothing like that yet
my 85 y/o father still all OK too

But my stepdad Bob had to have his removed,
IIRC he did some sort of chemo & they decided best to remove it
it's been a while now
I don't remember any bad side effects
that he told me anyway,
he's sort of tight-lipped, not really into sharing medical stuff

he seems to be doing fine, been going on 10+ years now
he's like 87 y/o

good luck I hope all goes well

Don't know about that one myself, but my father had one of those exploratory camera ops, where they poke a camera around and check for cancer and other issues - going back a few years. He asked for a copy on video (that's how long ago it was)...he loves showing people that one.

Apparently while laying on his side in the recovery room, a nurse was cleaning up up, and he needed to 'pass wind'. He said quietly to the nurse that he needed to pass a little wind....and she said "That's fine...carry on"
He let one hellava ripper go, and actually sprayed her gown like a shotgun blast. Caught the nurse by surprise ....but she just carried on doing her job. :D

A friend had surgery two months ago and is still carting around a piss bag. They say he will have to undergo therapy to learn how to hold it in again. No erection. I wince for him.

He had radiation first and they don't recommend that, so it must not have killed the cancer. I only listen, I don't ask many questions, so I don't know his particulars. The options are radiation, radioactive pellets, and surgery.

There's no anesthesia! The last "snip" they took on me felt like it was coming out my navel. That's when I told him that's enough. Did you see the instrument they use?
