Any reason to NOT use this 1978 block
With the extra cooling holes?

Any reason to not use it for what?? stock build, race, new motor for your motor home....you got to give us more info...I'm thinking you may be limited for high performance builds or boring more than .030 but not sure on that.
 
It is like any other block. Unless it has a sonic test you will never know how good of a block it is. What is the bore now?
 
I don't see why not, use it. Heck, if you plan to run iron heads on it, I would look for ones with the extra cooling loop around the spark plugs (why not). If using any other head, I don't see why it would be a problem. The head gasket will block those holes, or fill the holes if you want
 
It doesn't matter, aftermarket heads won't have those extra small holes to match the block.
Those later blocks usually have the top row of large cooling holes in a figure-8 shape; interesting that yours doesn't.
The later blocks have the thicker mount ears, and beefier main journal support area.

Only way to know how good the block is to sonic test the cylinder thicknesses. A visual check of the front of the block looking for evidence of core shift is the start. If the threaded holes are centered in the casting boss, that's a good sign. I fell victim to the Mopar Bible advice that the late model blocks were "thin wall". I now doubt that. Non of the '75-78 blocks I have sonic checked were significantly different than my early, '66-71 blocks.
