What is a good substitute for the black tar-like stuff that was used to seal the plastic solenoid housing to the aluminum starter body?

Some sound deadeners with black tar behind the foil would work. Somebody must had a few scrap pieces.

Gummy tape you wrap around ac expansion valves ?

The stuff on the A/c components is called PRESS-TITE. Its a soft, putty like black material with an adhesive back, that sticks to itself and what ever you are applying it to. You pull off the adhesive backing paper as you wrap it around the item. Its available at any A/C supply house and comes on a roll; its about 1 1/2" wide. Fairly inexpensive.
