I read somewhere that certain aluminum water pump housing & pump combos had issues that caused heating problems. Does anybody know anything about this? Something about some restriction or problem inside the housing???
Are these the inexpensive ones from 440 source or Summit?
Thanks, RRDon

Same here. Biggest problem is not the correct thermostat. U can’t use a cheap 1. Stewart Components comes to mind. Kim
And a 50 year old radiator. There are so many other choices, reproductions that even have the correct part number on or new aluminum 4 core ones.

The issues were some years ago and from what I remember it wasn't with smaller passages in the housing but with the design of the pump vanes. The stamped vanes like stock units were fine. The fancy milled vanes caused issues.

In either case I believe the housings now are all pretty good.

440 source housing and pump on my 383 for 4yrs now, no cooling issues

OP, yes you read correctly. Some years ago the 440 source units had issues due to the passage being too small as others have said, but it seems that it is now fixed. The water pump vanes themselves were another issue that I also experienced back then. I got my big block aluminum water pump housing and big block 6 vane water pump from mancini racing. No issues for 5000+ miles over 4 years.

I just got a Mancini with their stock pump and it is good quality

It was a 440 source issue several years ago. They had heat up complaints from some customers while others had no issue with them at all. They revised the housing. Source sold off the older questionable housings at clearance prices around 50 bucks. I almost bought one at the time but I happened to stumble onto a new MP housing for a few buck more.

It was a really big thread on Moparts quite a few years ago,do a search there if U want.

Thanks guys. I think I'll take most of your advice and just replace it with Mancini unit.
