Raised White Letters

Kidding of course...

The rubber dries out and acts more like a sponge absorbing oils and leaching chemicals from inside the tire leading to browning. A problem since before there were even RWL tires, 50's and 60's and 70's tires were mainly W/W. The Redlines and RWL tires of the 70's were for performance type cars are were in the minority of tires sold. There were white grease crayons for touching up these problems. They sealed the rubber and being a grease would soften the rubber on the surface.
Probably still available.
Using solvents on the rubber just dries it out worse. Chemicals like BlechWhite came out well before RWL tires existed so it was not just RWL tires who have had problems staying white.
Think using acetone on your hands to wash them. Dries the skin out, same for the tires.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I think I'll try the Purple cleaner since it is available and see how it goes,

Correct. You know you're tires! They are BFG TA's

I wanted to replace the tires on m y car due to age ( I think 15 years is long enough) And was looking at getting another set of BFGs . But Ive heard horror stories about not being able to keep the letters white.

So I bit the bullet and ordered a set of Diamond back redline radials earlier this week.

Wesley's Bleche White was bought out by Black Magic. Still available!

Grab a box of SOS pads at the grocery store.
If they do not get the letters back to white nothing will.

Here's what the result was...... I used the Purple cleaner full strength on the letters only, being careful to avoid the wheels. It's pretty strong stuff, and according to the warnings will damage aluminum. Then I cleaned the whole tire with Black Magic Bleche-White tire cleaner. End result was about 80% improvement on the white letters and the tires look like new. I'm happy with the results. Thanks for the help everyone!

Keep us posted on how long your cleaning lasts.

My Good Years brown also. Scrub them and my white walls with whesleys or the new Black Magic Bleche Whit. Still don't come out as good as new but it does brighten them up pretty well.

Yes, but the formula has ben changed, and it's not nearly as strong as it used to be!

Exactly, and I can guarantee if you have the BFG's with the browned out letters, a gallon of Westleys won't clean them up.

Don't laugh, but I still have a bottle from 40 years ago. Ok, you can laugh.

30 years of grim and discolor in one wipe off my neglected Goodyears ! Coleman stove fuel... naptha! That said, those BF Goodrich things have been turning Brown since the late '70's... whether it'll work on them, who knows.

Ditto on the Radial T/A I gave up on them when Kelsey came out with the retro lettering on a radial, unfortunately I think they only have one size, fortunately it was my size FR70-14 nice white letters

For what’s its worth here’s been my recipe, but must move quickly and have at your side:
- bucket of water, brush, and hose
- spray brake cleaner on dry letters
- scrub with water soaked brush immediately
- hose down tire/wheel immediately
- do not spray your wheels

Can a moderator delete my new post BF Goodrich Raised Brown Letters?
I can respond here instead.

But you don't have defective BFG Radial TA's that can't be cleaned with Wesleys. BFG knows about it and have replaced tires under warranty because of the defect.
