I need someone with knowledge of home central AC.

My home is 1800 sq ft and with a cathedral ceiling in the den. Since it was built in 76, I'm sure the insulation isn't that good. When I bought the place it had a 2 1/2 unit and it would run all afternoon once the outside temps hit the mid 90's. New unit time and I wanted a 5 ton but everyone argued with me. Well, I finally got that 5 ton unit several years ago and I love it.....and my humidity levels are very good. Thing is, the Shineese made crap coil in the attic sucks and am now on the 3rd one. Anyone make AC parts anywhere besides China??

I'm in Western NY... I go with 35 btus/square foot on a tight new build... 45 on an old farm house.
Ive never been to Texas and have no idea what the heat load would be but 400,000 sounds like a lot.

Lennox Elite A/C units are made here in Iowa.

How many sq/ft is the OP's house.

We just had a new Payne (Carrier) system installed in our 2000 sq/ft house for $6500.

(including a BOTL Honeywell t stat)

Definitely get a second and third bid.

I got a 4 ton day and night (carrier) coil and condenser 2 years ago at cost $1200 installed.

I put a brand new 20 ton Lennox system in my business. The next year the compressor wouldn't kick in. There was a 2 year labor warranty, parts were 10 years. Lennox and my A/C contractor made me pay $600 for the crane to lift the new unit up to the roof and take the old one down. Total bullshit.
Parts and Labor includes any equipment needed to do the job. I built 3 houses after that but didn't use Lennox or the A/c guy. Never used Lennox again !!!! That $600 cost them thousands !!!!

I don't blame you.

I don't blame you.
They lost even more than my business. I have a large contractor/builder customer base. I've told most of them about how Lennox doesn't stand behind their product. So who knows how many lost sales they experienced because they screwed me on that $600. :icon_fU: THEM !!!!

replace whole system its old, get three bids, read reviews on each business, lean towards middle bid, imo good luck

If you need to replace the system, consider ductless split systems by Mitsubishi. Depending on the layout and size of your house they are nice alternative, energy efficient due to inverter compressors that ramp up and down depending on the load.

10k seems very high unless you need new ductwork as your original question.

By the way R410A refrigerant will start being phased out in 2024.

Yep. Carrier is made in Mexico!!

In the fall our AC unit was not cooling off very well. We have central air and the main unit is drum-shaped outside the house. I thought may it needed to be recharged. We built this house 20 years ago.

A tech told me we need all kinds of fixes including the wall thermostat totaling $10,000.

Really???????

Help!
Ditch it. AC is not needed in Colorado, especially at your altitude.
How long have you been here again?

I feel for you guys living in CO as far as hiring HVAC contractors. Our daughter lives in a suburb of Denver and decided they wanted to add AC to their current furnace and ductwork. Pretty simple job. She called 5 different contractors with quotes between $6800 - $10k. This was for a 1.5 ton 13 SEER unit. Absolute craziness imo. And they all seem band together to hold the pricing sky high. I sell and install Trane. At the time I would have charged $2800 to install that system in WI. I ended up driving 15.5 hours each way to install one for them. Took me 6 hours total by myself. I had around $1700 in materials. So that tells me those jokers are getting $1000/hr.

Yea, really not needed here, especially if you're above 6,000'. Sure, we get our week or two of 100 degree heat in the summer but it's a dry heat.
The simple practice of closing the windows and doors down during the hot days then opening them up in the evenings and through the night and letting that cool dry air flow through the house, keeps it nice. My place never gets over 75 degrees inside during the summer. No AC here. AC is not needed unless you prefer your eyeballs to dry out. Common sense really.
