So I took on cleaning and rebuilding my carburetor. I wanted to try cleaning them in my ultrasonic cleaner. I tore the carb down and put them on a 50/50 mix of simple green and water. I ran a cleaning cycle and came back later to check out the results and the carburetor came out battleship grey!

So after some research I realized I screwed up using simple green. Wanted to see if anyone else did the same thing and know how to fix it or do I need to replace the carb now?

May be Aluminum rubbing compound from Harbor freight and those buffing wheel's. Sorry for what happened. We all make mistakes. Hard way to learn for sure. Some one said snow bole cleaner but I would not agree with that either.

Was it a carter type? There is an aluminum safe version of simple green, but the regular stuff is known to darken aluminum. The cleaner is slightly alkaline which promotes oxidation in aluminum. It's such a light surface problem that it shouldn't affect the running of the carb, but if you want to try bringing it back, try trailer brightener wash which is designed to clean oxidation from aluminum. https://fppf.com/product/trailer-brightener/

I used a 10:1 mixture of Pine-Sol and my carb came out looking really good - you could try it on a part and see how it goes . . .

Straight Pinesol will turn them grey too.

Carb needs blasted and replated where appropriate to make it look like new again.

Yes it is a Carter 9605S. Yeah the greyish coating rubs off, I was concerns it might clog up the carburetor when put back together.

I did see a suggestion of using a purple simple green. Seems similar to the trailer brightener you mentioned.

Aluminium wheel cleaner. Follow the directions as to soak and rinse time though.

If you have a junk carb of the same type, say AFB make a 75%water 25% white vinegar and what happens. If that doesn't mess up anything try your carb in that. Monitor it while cleaning. If helps maybe 50/50 mix.

Just get a bigger air cleaner housing to hide it! Good Luck

Lol, And don't forget about that float bowl you put in the Berrymans for 30 minutes and remember the next morning! :BangHead:

Future reference..there is a simole green aviation formula that is not caustic to aluminum.
