Hey guys , anyone been thinking about the electric steering assist conversion on a 60’s mopar muscle, non factory p/s car , the idea sounds pretty interesting but would require another column to cut up in the process, maybe a 66 b-body column non collapsing one ?

I once thought of it. Then I bought my 2018 Ram Rebel and this was my first experience with electric steering. Although its much easier to turn the steering wheel, the drivability changes. Typical road feel through the steering is almost gone. Takes some getting use to. I'd rather have the road feel back. Much better to have regular power steering in bad weather imo.

Better beef up the wiring, I remember working on the electric steering in my 2011 F150 and it was a 70 or 100Amp fuse..

Interesting, thanks for the info and input on subject!

Yes for sure, major fuse needs , but from what I’ve read most high current demands at at lock to lock , maybe not normal driving, just saying! Solomon said nothing new under the Sun , so someone has probably done this on lat 60’s b-body ! Maybe

They put Electric steering in the '68 Mustang that was at the paint shop with my Bee, but I paid no attention to another Eleanor recreation :jackoff:

Hear that , me either!

Electric steering, at least in my F150, still works when the power connections disconnect. Just harder to turn, no different than blowing a power steering pump belt.

Be interest in seeing a how to. If I ever get my 65 Dodge on the road regularly. That Hemi makes turning the wheel a chore parking in my garage.

I'm not entirely crazy about steer by wire, something goes wrong and you have no steering at all. Granted, it's no picnic when something bad happens with old tech, but still.
That's not true. It still steers, just like it would without an assist.

I have put several units in cars and they work great. I use units out of a Prius and you can do it for under 100 bucks.

The first pic is a non tilt column, the second is a tilt column. I take the driver's side fresh air vent out and mount the ecu there.(although you can mount it anywhere you want) Hook up 3 wires and your done.

Prius unit works in failsafe mode so you get good road feel but yet easy to turn. Return to center is lost some on these units so I add extra caster into the alignments.

Wow , Jamie that’s exactly what I won’t to do , in 67 Gtx but will probably use 66 Belvedere column and save my oem one , could you give more info on this conversion!
