I've got a knock and I have no idea where I should start troubleshooting. See video description for details. It only happens at idle and is way more pronounced when cold. Thank you for any help.

That kinda sounds like a loose flex plate sure sounds external to the engine

That is a floating multiple rattle type noise. A noise not associated with a rod or piston. As mentioned check the flex plate. Also check the crank pulley.

Sounds like a valve slapping the top of a piston - it's running like crap also. Pull you valve covers off and don't start it. Putting a hole in the piston is not good.

What am I looking for when I pull the covers? I've got the passenger side off already, didn't see anything unusual.

Did you inspect the flex plate? I assume it is an automatic.

I couldn't tell, but do you have headers? If so, look and see if the pipes are rattling against the torsion bars.

How are your motor mounts? Maybe oil pan hitting on the steering arm?

It sounds external to me to. All good suggestions from other posters.

Take a cut off broomstick about three feet long and start her up, listening around the motor with it.... you have to lay the one end right against your head, and see which direction it takes you.... it'll be slapping pretty loud in the bellhousing are if its flexplate related.

Sounds like something is loose externally to me.
Good suggestions so far by others as where to start looking.
Internal detonation knocks sound different to me than that does.

Sounds like something rattling around in either the oil pan or timing cover. It sounds like a marble getting knocked around by the crank counter weights.

Your video.....

That is the torque converter bolts. Put the car in gear and lightly power brake it. I'll bet the sound goes away.

I had similar issue with a 440 Cuda years ago, same type of sound at idle. It was the flex plate bolts. Ten minutes to fix, what a relief to find that.

Another case of loose flex plate bolts. They sure did cause a lot of noise for only being about a turn or two loose. Knocking is gone, I guess that 496 stroker is going to have to wait

Simple fix. Just think if you tore the thing down and found nothing. Your video pretty much made me about 95 percent positive it was not internal.
