Engine Knock???

Another case of loose flex plate bolts. They sure did cause a lot of noise for only being about a turn or two loose. Knocking is gone, I guess that 496 stroker is going to have to wait
Hmmm.....
You should be thanking these people:

That kinda sounds like a loose flex plate sure sounds external to the engine

That is a floating multiple rattle type noise. A noise not associated with a rod or piston. As mentioned check the flex plate. Also check the crank pulley.

Did you inspect the flex plate? I assume it is an automatic.

Take a cut off broomstick about three feet long and start her up, listening around the motor with it.... you have to lay the one end right against your head, and see which direction it takes you.... it'll be slapping pretty loud in the bellhousing are if its flexplate related.

I had similar issue with a 440 Cuda years ago, same type of sound at idle. It was the flex plate bolts. Ten minutes to fix, what a relief to find that.

Post #17, I did. I didn't think I needed to call everyone out by name. But every response whether it was for the flex plate or not is highly appreciated.

Good, good..... Now WHY is the big question.

Seems to be pretty common, the factory manual has the torque value at about 22 ft lbs so it's not much. I'll probably just check them every year or so.

Red Locktite is your friend.... if that doesnt hold them, theres a bigger problem. Glad you're looking the right direction now before you tore the motor down lol :thumbsup:

Me too, although I think I had the wife on board with a 496 stroker kit if the engine did fail.

That is awesome! Everytime my wife gets "on board", she brings her Honey-do list with her lol...................

Do you have the metal gasket installed between the starter and transmission housing? The converter flex plate bolt heads will rub and knock if the gasket plate is bent.
