Can someone please explain tattoos?

I remember once when I was younger standing in the gas station with my dad. There was a guy behind us that was just a trashy mess, stinky, and had several piercings in his face. Dad was staring at him for what must've been a little too long and the guy asked what dad's problem was. Dad replied, no problem, you just looked like you fell in my tackle box.
Omg I'll never forget that!

I don’t mind ink on guys military guys are expected or if it’s something important I get it.. Seeing a stunning woman inked is like buying a used car, it’s been used .. a blank canvas ruined isn’t cool, there is a reason we like curves and clean lines.. why ruin it. IMO ..

Thats an opinion not a fix and I'd appreciate it if you would make your own statement's instead of changing mine.

You really are a sensitive pussy, aren't you? One word, NO!

My Dad is an ex Marine (tattoo), Special Services (tattoo), golden gloves boxer (tattoo), ex 70's Biker (tattoos). Growing up all the kids and my buddies feared my Dad. His arms are covered in tats. Everyone has always questioned why I never had any since my Dad does. While he is a bad *** and my true hero. He made me the man I am today. I just never felt the need I needed anything on my body for any reason.

I was a tattoo artist for years. I quit a few years back. I don't have any myself (called me the naked gun) but I was proud to see people walk around with my artwork. It also helped me buy a lot of the Mopar parts I needed.
I also have a lot of friends with tats. A lot of my biker buddies love the skulls and dragons etc etc. It's a symbol for them. As for tough, let's just say I'm glad they are my friends. They've had my back on a few occasions in the past. We've been friends since we were punk kids and I love them like brothers, tats or no tats.

Every single young person I know has tattoos. I have 0. And like it that way. Your more orignal now by not having them then having them. They will get the dumbest stuff tatted just so they can say they have a tattoo.

And they certainly aren't fashion statements either! That's the funniest **** I've read all week!

First, you get a tat. Then, another tattoo. If you have more than two, does it then become a tathree ?

I dont know if it was mentioned yet, but let's not forget the rising popularity in face tattoos. Look at how sophisticated people were 80 years ago to now. From dressing proper when you left the house to wearing PaJamas, having green or blue hair and now face tats. I'm so disgusted with the entire planet anymore and it's only getting worse lol.

I’m sixty, old enough to remember a few dumb fads. The worst, at least in my opinion, were platform shoes, and that baggy pants thing. Now I can add face tattoos and piercings.

Face tattoos, yeah, that's gonna look great when you get old and wrinkled.

I feel the same way. I've seen a few subtle ones that weren't bad, but when you have just big gaudy random tats with no rhyme or reason, it breaks up the lines and looks like crap IMHO.

I can't remember her name, but a long time back I saw some chick on the internet that was proud of having black sleeves. No design, no fade, just BLACK. Something about showing she had a 'dark soul' she had numerous other tats and piercings too. She was probably very beautiful without the tats, but now looks like a paper jam at the quick copy.

I remember 20 years ago when tattoos started becoming commonplace. I was listening to G. Gordon Liddy on the radio. He said tattoos are the American version of the caste system in India. Draw your own inferences.

Good friend of mine had an eagle tattooed on his arm sometime back. As he got older it morphed into Jimmy Durante. Naturally we teased him about it. So he got it covered with an Indian with a wolf headress. He says he part Indian. That now looks like a dude with a rat on his head

I see a lot of you don't get the whole tattoo thing. That's fine. It's not for you to understand it. It's for the people who get them to understand it. I admit there are some really dumb tats, I've seen many and had to cover them with another tat. There are others that see tats as a right of passage. Some cultures covet them as part of their religion. Some tats tell a story, or a memorial of a loved one. I've done many of those. Remember, there are those that don't get us motorheads spending boatloads of cash and time into old primitive cars. That's for us to get and not them. I even have fellow car guys that will put down someone else's car car because it's not to their liking. I will actually get on their case about it. We all have our own ideas. If you don't get it then it's not for you to get.

I'm really surprised at the judgemental attitudes expressed here, since this seems to be a libertarian crowd.

In order to form an opinion one must first be judgemental.
That's an odd take.

I guess what I should have said, is that I am surprised at the character judgments made based on the single criteria of whether a person has a tattoo or not.

Odd? A decision is a judgement call.
If you like something you judge it as being good. If you dislike it, you judge it as being bad. We make judgement calls all day every day. Its how we decide to live our lives.

I have never got today's fad of tattoos. I have plenty of friends that do partake. One has even said. "Man up! And get you at least one?" I said "Man up?" "Letting some strange dude draw on me?" "Nothing weird about that!" I can see if it represents a time of service. Or a very significant remembrance in your life? But most I've seen is because they had nothing better to do with $500? (And that's just starter price? I guess?)
