The Emma Maersk burns 3,600 gallons of heavy fuel oil an hour at full speed or 1,660 gallons/hour at "economy".

wow sort of puts it in perspective doesn't it ?
**** coming from far east or even Europe,
China, Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea, India,
or S. Africa, Australia, New Zealand etc.
I wonder how many gallons ? they burn to get here
& at what cost per gallon, must be crazy $-#'s
& how much labor force, maintenance or total coast
before unloaded or loaded

especially to western ports,
or thru the Panama Canal or getting held up
because some douche got stuck/ran it into a mudbank
or thru seas with piracy etc.

loading or after unloading it goes way up,
longshoreman & unions etc.

that's all gotta be huge $-#s

got me thinking thanks @Dibbons

Where's the green in that. That one ship uses more fuel than all of us on the forum and we are the culprits?

Actually the 2 stroke diesel engines in the container ships are some of the most fuel efficient per ton moved in the world.

Lol, and who are the ******** that buy all the imported crap?
Blame them!!!!

Many items arent made here any more so where do you get them from?

I can't see them going to electric power anytime soon....

Think about how much they haul though. Those containers are half along as a semi trailer x how many?

They still run two stroke emd type engines on those things? I figured they would be large four stroke cat or Cummins type by now just because of stinky exhaust standards... of course that doesn’t matter to them..

2 strokes in diesel without emissions are extremely more efficient.

I work on the old emd 545 and 645 everyday, both slobber a lot of oil but seem very durable and take abuse well . They are some old switching locos. Just didn’t really think they were that efficient , like the old Detroit two stroke tech bit the dust on road trucks years ago.

If we could buy anything made In USA before offshore, Then they wouldn’t need to restock the offshore junk as fast. Keep you business in USA.

So hard to find USA made things. I found a USA made garden hose the other day, felt as good as hitting a $10 lottery ticket!

That one ship is hauling the amount of container volume that would take 5,000 semi-trailers to transport.

I have a book on the Queen Mary (which was larger than the Titanic) that mentions it got 13 feet per gallon of bunker oil. Mind you, it would be cruising at 37 mph. (32.5 knots) which was really moving in the 1930s. Even faster than the submarines and torpedoes of the day, which was useful when it was used as a troop carrier.

what they burn is bunker oil I was told and you can see their exhaust trail for hundreds of miles out on the ocean , they cut way back about 500 mi from n am shore so you see very little when they come to shore . had a buddy that delivered jet planes around the world said you wouldnt belive the polution , I was taking auto emisions courses when he told me .

This is typical of the world at the moment. There are big issues that could be reduced or eliminated, but instead the governments concentrate on the small issues and feed the public the necessary bullshit to suit.
If countries went back to manufacturing their own goods, growing their own produce etc, people vacationed in their own country, and populations were managed with countries learning to exist and improve without the need for constant growth, then we would all be better off.
Instead they push things like electric vehicles,.and a great many people out there will believe their bullshit that this will save the world , whilst flying halfway across the globe to go on holiday or buying imported products that could have been made at home.
