Fuel Economy on World's Largest Container Ships

Interesting about that Maersk ship engine, I’d like to see that coming together.. thanks for the education! I learn something new everyday. When you stop learning life isn’t fun.

Actually, it's what companies opted to reduce their costs by utilizing an exploited workforce half a planet away at the expense of American jobs and manufacturing industry.

The consumer didn't just wake up one day and say "hey, let's all buy chinese made goods".

1600 gallons an hour on economy setting - that would more than empty our swimming pool in two hours! I wonder how long it takes to fuel one of those monsters?

The use of bunker oil is something coming to a halt. They either have to install exhaust scrubbers or use the higher grade fuel. The higher grade fuel is cheaper than the scrubbers. But, the bunker grade is a byproduct oil refining. Now what to do with it? For now storage. In a year or two theylle run out of storage space. Price will drop enough to install scrubbers.

There were reasons for that but this is the wrong forum.

Think about how much they haul though. Those containers are half along as a semi trailer x how many?

That's the real problem today! People are way to narrowminded to see, and think outside the box! Let alone even attempt to do either!

The largest can carry up to 24,000 containers, I have personally watched car after car for 12 hours loaded in 1 ship.

loud as hell(?)
revs way the up - like a weed whacker(?)

I work on the old emd 545 and 645 everyday, both slobber a lot of oil but seem very durable and take abuse well . They are some old switching locos. Just didn’t really think they were that efficient , like the old Detroit two stroke tech bit the dust on road trucks years ago.
I want your job!

We had V16 two stokes, no exhaust valves, four intakes. Was really my first time seeing engine rooms. It was just a block with individual cylinder power packs. Mechanics would disconnect the connecting rod by reaching in through a access door, disconnect everything and riggers would pull the power pack out. They had a whole mess of rebuilt ones in wooded boxes ready to be swapped in. When the boat was in dry dock the mechanics rebuilt everything
