71-74 fender question

Im going to look at fenders tomorrow. How do I tell the difference between the years? I know 71 had the markers different. But from one fender on the floor, how do you tell? 72-74. I heard 73-74 had a bigger wheel gap, but how much?

71 & 72 were almost the same except the side maker lights which you know. I think 73 & 74 are the same. Also, Dodge is different from Plymouth and 2 doors are different from 4 doors of course. I'm sure someone will chime in if I forgot something else.

You didn't specified but I guess you are asking about Chargers? Because Plymouths are easier to note the differences as far I can tell since they are completelly diff


71/72 are the same except for the sidemarker

73/74 are the same

External differences is just the wheel opening height, being 73/74 around 1.5"-2" higher.

Internally the radiator core support fitment is completelly different between them and the 71/72 fender on a 73/74 will leave a huge gap getting visible the wheels throught the gap with hood open.

The 71/72 gets a single shaped ( flat ) splash shield to the front valence attached with 2 bolts to the fender

73/74 gets a larger and angled front splash shield attached with 4 bolts to the fender.

I think have collected some pics of everything of this somewhere. Will search and post.

Extra note:
Has been told one of the bolts to the inner fender doesn't match, I think the one where the braces to the firewall goes, but I haven't checked that personally.

I always thought it was odd they changed so much on these cars for what little changed for appearances sake.

the internal changes are for the suspension upgrade. That changed the frame rails height allong with inner fenders and radiator core support

I agree. The 73 Charger redo was like an exxagerated version of the 71-72 styling. Where Plymouth made significant changes in appearance to the 73 Satellite, The Charger styling was similar enough to 72, that most casual observers didn't see the differences.
But park them side by side, and they are very different cars.
